Re: Different genres
[shameless plug]You should check out my horror VN then![/shameless plug] And if I'm not wrong, Taleweaver has several awesome mystery/SF/horror pieces lying about, so you should check those out too. Saya no Uta is a goddamn masterpiece and is probably what really got me into VNs in the first place....

Re: Different genres
Thanks for all the recommendations, guys! Just started playing Saya no Uta and... I would kind of like to see more Lovecraftian visual novels out there. I'm not a big fan of Lovecraft, but he did influence the horror genre in some pretty significant ways (though I also feel that horror writers need ...

Different genres
Not sure if this goes here or in writing, but... How does everyone feel about noir? Detective stories? Murder mysteries? There are a few mystery games I've encountered, but most of them seem to be focused on romance and not mystery, but of course this isn't always the case. I know romance isn't the ...

Re: Japanese honorifics?
Visual novels _have_ been sold on large casual portals, and there are a decent number of people whose first exposure to the genre is through english games, not through otakuism. You're right that they aren't that likely to be adopted enmasse by the entire hidden object game crowd, but there are man...

Re: Japanese honorifics?
It does kind of reek of fanboyism, but I don't know many casual players of visual novels Those two things mightn't be unrelated, though. VNs have almost no learning curve, someone who's never played a videogame in their lives could have a decent go at them. And games like Phoenix Wright (yeah, I kn...

Re: Japanese honorifics?
I read a web comic once, set in Japan but by an American (I think) creator. She kept honorifics in the case of nicknames that used them, which wouldn't translate the same way as legal titles would have. I'm not sure what to do about them, personally. I kind of like the English dub of Haruhi Suzumiya...

Re: Playing with reader expectation
Why, of course, DO troll your audience. Hit them as hard as you can, and do it well , so well that they will feel the pain days after you've hit them. Hit them in the worst places, the places that really, really hurt. Kill off the people they sympathize with the most, or build someone as the most r...

Re: Playing with reader expectation
@sciencewarrior: I see where you're coming from, but I don't know, I just have different ideas about interacting with the audience. Granted, I wouldn't keep everything a secret from the audience in like, the promo for it, but I wouldn't want to give away the bigger twists (which is really the only w...

Re: Playing with reader expectation
Personally, I'd not dislike a story that would present one guy as this utterly, unlikeable jerk and then it turns out that, yes, he is an utterly unlikeable jerk, despite your best attempts to view him to the contrary. Ha, yeah, there do tend to be a lot of "he's a jerk, but secretly he's real...

Re: Playing with reader expectation
(Sorry about the spoiler tags, they're up now :-/) But anyway, yes, I realize it's completely troll-ish. But I was looking to kind of break out of the usual mold of "guy acts like this, turns out to be that" kind of thing. I had intended to make the routes satisfying despite all the death,...

Playing with reader expectation
Or: is it appropriate to troll your audience? I'll be using an unfinished game of mine as an example. I wanted it to be subversive and edgy, but I ended up abandoning it for other things (such as NaNoWriMo and homework). Say you have an otome game. Say that there are 4-5 guys whom you can pursue, bu...

Re: Looking for everyone to work on the largest LSF Project
Oh wow. I'm just curious: would it be possible for another writer to join right now?
If not, I totally understand. I've seen the original thread, there's like a million writers. But still.

(I am so behind the times :-( ) Hello, people who stumble upon this thread! I am GratuitousMoonspeak, currently writing Lily's route. I've been kind of busy with school work but fear not, I have managed to set aside some time to actually get some writing done. Anyway, I hope people are actually inte...

Re: What is your religion?
Also, about Religions that spread or have spread through violence, it has nothing to do with religion, it has to do with people. There are bad people who CLAIM to follow every religion, but that doesn't change what the religion teaches, which is why you have to look at the religion yourself. ^ This...
