Re: Language-Learning VN Game for Japanese

Rossfellow wrote:Maybe it can be handled like childrens story books. Very basic structures that make use of grammar lessons or vocabulary but has the potential to be engaging, if done right.
That's the holy grail, right there. Difficult to pull off well, but worth its weight in gold if it is.

Re: Language-Learning VN Game for Japanese

Go Go Nippon is the one that everyone knows, but isn't so educational. It offers interesting trivia about Tokyo, but as far as I know, no language skills. Plus the theme of the game may be off-putting to many (or most?) people.

I think OP is interested in real education.

Re: Language-Learning VN Game for Japanese

I think it's difficult but totally possible to make some educational elements hidden within the plot. It's certainly a lot easier to do it overtly, but teachers often find ways of sneaking target language into conversations, for either review or to give context to what will be studied, so I don't se...

Re: Language-Learning VN Game for Japanese

I'm not sure what I wrote that offended you. I've been teaching for 8 years. My students are doing very well. If you are struggling to teach English to Japanese people, I would be more than happy to bat around a few ideas with you. That kind of discussion has helped me a lot, especially in the first...

Re: Language-Learning VN Game for Japanese

Hi. As Tempura mentioned, I've been working on something similar for maybe 4 or 5 years. I work at a glacial pace due to real world commitments, but never really stopped, except for 2 months when Dark Souls 3 came out. I'm also a permanent resident of Japan and a teacher. Different languages, but ma...

Re: How do you come up with ideas?

Start with a goal. Brainstorm settings that would be functionally suitable and then that's when inspiration is most likely to strike.

Re: #renpy Minecraft Server

The server really is great, but we need more people. Drop by #renpy so you can be white listed and given the IP.

I need more victims participants for the super secret gauntlet/dungeon.

Re: Teacher Student relationships

As a teacher in Japan, the idea of student/teacher relationships is horrifying. Seriously, if they are in school, they are kids. There's a very specific name for adults who are attracted to children. A lot of people try to justify it, especially in Japan, but it doesn't change the facts. There are s...

Re: Will you be my master?

Why not join the #renpy IRC channel? What you listed is fairly common conversation there, and with 45-50 people online at any time who are interested in discussing development and ideas. As long as you don't mind leaving your client open, as people usually idle until they want to jump into the conve...

Re: Preference in Choices

Personally I like each choice to be a concise and fairly accurate description of what the protagonist will say or do. If the player says or does something that I didn't intend, the feeling of agency is torn from my grasp, leaving me jaded and less likely to care about future choices. Every single ch...

Re: Anyone Else Thinking About Educational VNs?

Interesting links, although the quiz one I interpreted to mean that learners need context more than quiz style review. And actually, as a language teacher myself, I tend to get much more success from encouraging creative use of language rather than forcing them to memorize what words mean. That ties...

Re: Red eyes in the darkness - Combat public beta (Demo)

I'll make my feedback brief and petty. Feel free to ignore as much as you want. It looks odd having the wolves all being level (from the top). The positions should be adjusted to reflect distance. Having a wolf in the distance and the nearby tree somehow appear behind it looks weird. If the tree was...

Re: Visual Novel Survey.

1. Do you need a love story in a game in order to enjoy it? No. I have no interest in love stories. 2. If you are playing a slice of life game do you need sex scenes? No. In fact, I'll probably won't play it if it contains sex scenes. 3. When you hear the term slice of life what comes to mind? This...

Can I request Sanctum? Played the demo and it's right up my alley. I'm a huge tower defense fan, and the FPS aspect is just icing on the cake.
