Sounds like you got a bad deal. You might want to invest in a Soundblaster sound card be carefull though putting it in, only handle the card by its edges and make sure the computer is unpluged when you work on it, dont forget to make sure you have no static electricity, one spark can ruin a computer...

I am guessing that might be an OS problem.
Said problem does not show up on Windows ME.

No such luck, though I did find some nice discounts at
http://www.amazon.com its a lot more than just a
book store. The used and new section is worth a look
and a lot of times the software / music / books are in like
new condition.

Thanks for the info / advice.

Its a tough choice, I can get Windows 2000 for $67 but
Windows XP is $198 and I already bought the Windows 2000
secrets book for $5. I would be upgrading from Windows ME, which
is an upgrade from Windows 98.

I am also interested in running dual boot with Linux Slackware 10.0

Will your software be compatible with Windows 2000
or just Windows XP?

Is there a big technical difference between the two
as far as making games and other software?

Thanks, I am still decideing which one to get.

Thanks, that helps a lot.
Polykarbon reminds me of other art lesson books
I have read, unfortunately those books I have
only cover how to draw animal forms.

Once again thanks.

From what I have heard Windows XP has a whole different way of handleing the GUI interface, that could also include the program icon. On another topic, System Restore creates protected CAB files that cannot be deleted therefore a reinfection of computer virus is always just a reboot away. Also I hav...

I dont know about windows XP, but windows ME will automaticly
supply a default icon to .exe files that dont have one.
For windows 95, 98, and ME the icon size is 32x32 with 16 bit color.

In my experience profiling Ren'Py, the most expensive operation is moving images from the main memory to the screen. (Or blitting them around in main memory.) I would think the slowdown of PCI relative to AGP could be significant here. With a GPU video card it makes no perceptible difference, most ...

Being a builder of computers I will say that the Celleron procesor is a bad choice for a gameing machine because it often "hicups" that is a timeing fault with the processor itself. When building with cheap processors best to use AMD, I have only found a few software incompatibilities and ...

I'm not familiar with Java, but in C/C++ nothing stops you from accessing memory directly (even under Windows). However you need to lock the area of memory you want to access first to obtain a physical address. I am sure that it can be done but it's only like the most closely gaurded programing sec...

I started out with Basic on TRS80 and Comodore128, that is Basic with line numbers so I am a beginer at OOP like Java and C++. I feel that OOP is too restrictive and doesn't allow for individual programing style and is also weak, it doesn't have direct access to memory, file input output, or graphic...

So far all I have is Microsoft Visual J++ and a free C+ compiler. Most books do not cover memory management or advanced I/O for Java or C+. The use of arrays for game data and saveing, loading game, and windows GUI is what I got hung up on. I first started programing back in July 26, 1983 on a TRS80...
