Re: Are you allowed to quit playing?

I feel like it depends on the reason why you're playing if you should quit or not. If it's only for enjoyment... then yes, might as well stop, no reason to waste time doing something that's unenjoyable. I personally have played through games I dislike though, usually with the purpose of learning mor...

Re: Legal age for characters

iirc in America, media can show underage characters "doing stuff". The difficulty arises in that the media is immediately going to jump up in rating, and any game rated 'A' is going to face some serious troubles in getting their name out there. For example, console games with an A rating a...

Re: When making OCs and their backstory just....

When I was younger I used to worry about having too dark backstories or present events. Now I've accepted my sadism and just accepted that it's probably part of being a writer ^^ Although if -everyone- has some dark depressing stuff, I usually find it's too heavy, so I try to limit it to 1-2 charact...

Re: Questions about learning how to Write for a VN

I recommend research. Download a variety of visual novels of varying genres, made in different engines, commercial and free. Then play them for more than simple entertainment. Analyze what works well, what isn't working, and the why for everything. Why am I connected to this character? Why don't I c...

Re: Bisexuality in VNs

Depends on a few factors, but I'd generally say go for it, as long as it makes sense for your game. Just make sure that you clearly advertise the romance as bi, some people will look forward to it, or others avoid it. Also since some people would specifically look forward to it, you don't want it to...

Re: Tips on Writing Comedy?

When you start breaking down comedy, it's almost all directly formulas. The one that SundownKid mentioned - repeating something until the third time, with the third time being the punch line, is a very common and effective method of delivering comedy. You do not necessarily have to be a funny person...

Re: Which first? Learning Ren'Py or creating chara/concept A

Why not do both? Until you're comfortable with both your idea and the Ren'Py engine, you can just fiddle around and see how you can do whatever. I started off making a joke VN for fun, mainly just to see what I could do with Ren'Py. Meanwhile, I kept the creative going on the more serious project I ...

Re: Can't write a novel.....

When writing longer stories, there are points when I feel like I have 'writer's block' or can't really find a good way to express my idea. Rather than stopping, I just force myself to keep writing for the sake of progress. Later I revisit and re-work the chapter I'm unhappy with. The time and subseq...

Re: Word Length for a VN converted to hours read

Thanks all for the responses. I also got some helpful PMs about it. I probably should have mentioned, but this is more for project scope planning than an exact hard number to nail. I've done some traditional writing before, but I'm trying to adapt to VN writing - so although there are some descripti...

Word Length for a VN converted to hours read

Hi all, I've searched a little online but no luck so far, so I was hoping someone could help me out here. Basically I was wondering how long it takes for someone to read x amount of words. I've seen that short VNs usually last 2-10 hours, but how many words would be in it? That seems to depend on ho...

Just to make sure, you are sending them the entire zip and not just the .exe , yeah? You can also try building specifically for whatever they're using; in your case, building it for windows specifically.

Re: Does anyone have an opinion on Oxford (serial) commas?

I usually see and was taught the way your first sentence has it (I am in IL, US). As you said, the second way is still correct, but not used as much. It bothers some people, but probably not most. I would pause an extra second the first time I come across it without the commas, mainly bc I'm not use...

Re: What is your specialized genre?

I try to step outside of my comfort zone and experiment with different genres, mainly in the hopes that it will later equip me with the skills to overcome w/e writing is later necessary. So I've tried sci-fi, fantasy, romantic comedy, and others. But I usually prefer and end up writing action, so I ...
