Re: Japan and gun crime?
Are you actually proposing that the numbers don't matter and Japan secretly has all kinds of yakuza gun violence you're just not hearing about? I should think one look at the aforementioned statistics would put an end to your discussion. Since you're asking for an anecdotal answer, as an American wh...

Re: Making some money with a commercial VN - is it possible?
It's not practical or smart to depend on it right off the bat. That's not to say it's not something to work towards, because obviously it can be done, but if you want to survive on the money, you need money that you can count on being there. You'd probably be better off doing commissions until you h...

Re: Using real life cultures/locations is appropriation?
Respect is the key thing, I think. If you approach it respectfully and do your research, I don't think you'll offend anyone. However, I definitely suggest finding someone to help you out, because you will make mistakes in your authenticity, and people who know better than you will notice. I'm basica...

Re: Educational VNs - your thoughts?
How close to the truth should an educational VN be?/Would you prefer the actual facts to be presented within the story, or as an extra? When I was a kid, I loathed history because the way they taught it in school was as dry and boring as possible, just endless lists of names and dates to memorize. ...

Re: Educational VNs - your thoughts?
It's really hard to answer these questions not knowing what subject you want to teach. If you're trying to teach a process of some sort (like math, language acquisition, etc), I'd say you could have as much leeway as you like with the story and simply concentrate on making the gameplay do the bulk o...

Re: 2014 Indie Game Maker Contest
I'm doing it! I'm working on an action RPG in RPGmaker VX Ace. My rule for myself is I'm not allowed to make any new assets, to force myself to concentrate on programming/writing. I'll probably break that rule sooner or later, but for now it seems to be helping.

This looks lovely. Count me in for one more person who doesn't need romance in their horror.

Re: Goetia Club [Horrorish Dramedy] [All types romance]
I'm so happy there's interest! I wish I had more progress to show, though I'm still quietly plugging away. Lately I've been working on enemies like this one: http://i61.tinypic.com/1z5hzwg.png Admittedly, I've been thinking of putting this on the backburner to work on a simple game for RPGmaker's Ju...

Re: PR nightmare: When indie devs are attacked
As much as there is to be said about taking criticism with grace, even that of the "entitled jerks on the internet griping just to gripe" variety, the gaming community can get really toxic. Trolling turns into legitimate harassment all too often. It's seriously distressing when the only re...

Re: Goetia Club [Horrorish Dramedy] [All types romance]
Thanks! Boy, it's been forever since I reported on my progress... I'm up to 18,944 words and am working on some pseudo-16-bit graphics for the first demon summoning bit. Thus far I have the sprite that I made into my avatar and this: http://i61.tinypic.com/2sb9z15.png This is my first time doing ser...

Re: Why Yuri games are so unpopular?
The demographic being largely girls (and largely straight girls, at least in theory) is probably the biggest reason why yuri isn't going to get as much traction as het or yaoi. Even amongst girls who enjoy lesbian stories, there seems to be the thought that "yuri" is usually made by men, f...

Re: Would you play commercial VN without voices?
If I'm playing the game in Japanese (as in, not translated at all), I need the voices to help with my comprehension. But normally, playing something where the text is in English, I'll tend to leave Japanese audio on. Of course, I usually end up ignoring and skipping it before it finishes. It just sl...

Akinator's been around just about forever, so hopefully whatever problem it had was temporary... Avast is telling me it's safe now, at least.

Re: Your first ever video game.
I had Mario/Duck Hunt. I used to sit right next to the screen with that blaster and cheat... as a kid I never knew you could actually just aim it at the wall.
