Another trick to make flashbacks feel more natural is to NOT have them appear at random. Instead, have a character see/feel/smell/hear/read something that triggers the memory. That way, there's an explanation as to why the audience is seeing the flashback now during this point of the story.

It sounds like your characters are of "true neutral" moral alignment. You may want to read up on that alignment to see examples of such characters.
