Re: Question regarding offering preferred pronouns option for main player character

I tried looking for games (that are set in the 60s or before) that give players pronoun options, for examples on how different games have approached this. The interactive fiction game, Tally Ho! is set in the 1920s and has a male/female/non-binary option. I've played through the game and found that ...

Re: Determining Stats for a Simulation-Style VN

It all depends on what the stats will be determining in the game: The situation the player character is in. If the situation involves survival (D&D and Fallout), you'll use more primal-focused stats. If it's a game where you're an "intellectual" character, like a wizard or detective who needs brains...

Re: Question regarding offering preferred pronouns option for main player character

If you wish to stay more historically-accurate, but still want to add pronoun options for androgynous/non-binary player characters, you could use he/she/he--the third "he" would be considered gender-neutral versus the first "he," which would be the male option. The use of "he" to refer to a person o...

Re: More is Less - Is that always true?

One of my English teachers gave some useful advice on this subject. She said that "Your writing should be like a skirt: Short enough to be interesting, but long enough to cover the subject." And I think stories are like that too. I like using brevity, but you need to give the audience enough informa...

Re: Addictive TV Series?

I highly recommend: BBC's Mulberry - (My favourite tv series ever.) A dark comedy about mysterious-but-goofy guy (Mulberry) who gets hired by a grumpy, elderly woman to work in her mansion as her manservant. He tries to get her to live life to the fullest (much to her annoyance), but it soon becomes...

Thank you some much for sharing this with us! It's really interesting to see so many different creators share their thoughts on visual novels. :D

Re: How to Create Compelling Antagonists/Villians in Otome Sims

Another thing to consider is making the antagonist the anti-thesis of your protagonist. For example, if the theme of your visual novel is about the power of friendship, the antagonist could be someone who is friendless, doesn't believe friendship to be a good thing, or takes advantage of other chara...

Re: How to Write Good Choices: A Guide

This is a very thoughtful article! It's interesting to divide different choices into categories. It's a new way of looking at choices when developing a visual novel.

Thank you for writing it. :)

Video Editing Software Recommendations?

I want to make a trailer for a visual novel, but the programme I've been using (OpenShot) crashes a lot and can't handle videos that are over 30 seconds long. I want to find a replacement. I'm looking for a programme that has the following features: Available for PC. Layering/multiple video and audi...

Re: Time gaps: How does it affect the flow of a story?

For me, I'll follow the rules of conservation of detail and "only show the important bits" (because I like brevity). You can even be creative and use time skips to add comedy. I'll use my all-time favourite transition, ever. It's from the TV series Jeeves & Wooster : (Scene set-up: Bertie Wooster, f...

Re: Long dialog trees

I write the script in Word 2013 and use the Collapsible Header tool (I separate scenes--and sometimes, longer choice routes--under different headers). If I need to jump to a specific scene I'll use the Find Word hotkey (Ctrl+F) and type in the sentence or scene I want to reach.

Re: Is the Forum Search laggy / borken for everyone?

I had some problems with the Search bar for a day (it happened a few days ago). I got a message saying it had too many people using it at the same time (I can't remember the exact message, but it was along those lines). It's working okay for me now, but sometimes I'll search for a specific thread I ...

Re: Releasing an alpha/demo.

Jim Sterling gave some good advice on this. In one of his videos for a Steam Greenlight game, he said something along the lines of, ".If you feel the need to put a sign at the beginning of the game that says, 'This is in Alpha and the visuals and bugs will be fixed in the final version,' then you're...

Re: Tips on my Fake Dating Site

I think it's a very good start, but the website feels a bit outdated and flat (depending on when you game it set, you'll want it to look more like current websites like YouTube, Twitter, etc, which is currently aiming for rounded shapes that "pop"). The text to the left feels a bit cut-off, so more ...

This happened to me yesterday. It's fixed for me today. I guess it temporarily glitches out once in a while.
