Re: Writing in 2nd Person?

There's also other ways to use 2nd person narration, regarding the narrator's relationship with the player character--the narrator doesn't have to be talking about the player character. For example, in the novel, You by Caroline Kepnes, the narrator, Joe, is also one of the two main characters. The ...

Re: Using Flashbacks Effectively

Another trick to make flashbacks feel more natural is to NOT have them appear at random. Instead, have a character see/feel/smell/hear/read something that triggers the memory. That way, there's an explanation as to why the audience is seeing the flashback now during this point of the story.

Re: Proper use of the {w} tag in visual novels.

I use {w} quite a bit, usually for comedic or dramatic timing, to emphasise a point. Here's a comedic example from one of my visual novels, Must Love Jaws . The {w} is in the last line: b "I simply said that sharks {i}can{/i} live in lakes. Not that there's one {i}in Lake Huron!{/i}" m "But why can'...

Re: How to make a socially awkward character...interesting??

A big element to this character would be who the MC is. Is she outgoing and less quiet? That would make her a foil to his character, allowing their personalities to shine more brightly when they're together. For ideas, take a look at other works' characters who fit the archetype you're looking for (...

Websites That Let You Edit Sheet Music?

I'm looking for a free website where you can create sheet music, and then play it back through a virtual piano. Similar to Flatio, Musescore, or Noteflight, but with an online/demo version where you can test it out without having to download anything or sign up to the website first. I'm a newbie whe...

Re: What do you think about a story without a hero or a villain

It sounds like your characters are of "true neutral" moral alignment. You may want to read up on that alignment to see examples of such characters.

Re: Discouraging Lack of Art Skills

I've written about this before, but I'd like to give advice on this using myself as an anecdote. Back in 2009, I could draw like this: https://78.media.tumblr.com/cf2cb75d436b77e1c723e7b335bde8e7/tumblr_n3gk04cd8n1szx217o1_500.jpg It was the best of my abilities, and I was very proud of it. Fast-fo...

Re: How to handle aspects of multiple POV characters

This video essay by Taylor J. Williams has some very thoughtful words on this subject: D0ueTlMrglI Basically, when you're writing the script, think of the plot and focus like this: Imagine a 'X'-sided dice that is re-rolled every scene. Each time, it lands on a different character, showing events un...

Re: Leaving GUI for last?

There's not hard-and-fast rule to what order you "should" create assets for your visual novel, but you should at least have some idea of the GUI's placemen and size, because that will effect other aspects of production. For example, how big the textbox is, and how transparent it is will effect what ...

Re: Adding an AlphaMask to a Character Sprite? [Solved]

I just got to play through this, Thanks Katy133. I learned a lot! I feel like I still need to learn more about AlphaMasks, when you use them, the various things you can do with them, that sort of thing. But this is a great start! Thanks! ETA: Katy133...actually I have a request...which you can igno...

Re: Writing Courtroom Trials

I think a good piece of advice with writing a fair play mystery game is Justin Alexander's Three Clue Rule. Basically, the Three Clue Rule is this: "For any conclusion you want the PCs to make, include at least three clues." An example of using this in an Ace Attorney-inspired game would be this: (1...

Noir-Style Shadow/Lighting Effects

I got help on how to do this in another thread, so I thought I'd share what I learned here. Basically, the code allows you to do this: wOCJRwpi5bc It uses Alpha Masks to add lighting or shadows on top of sprites. Similar to a noir film. Tutorial script I used: define s = Character("Sylvie") transfor...

Wow! Could you post a zip of the actual test project so I could study the image files? I don’t completely have Alpha Mask settled in my mind and would love to see the actual art files. I might finally get it!
Sure, I've attached it to this post. :D

Re: Adding an AlphaMask to a Character Sprite?

Okay, I've modified Ren'Py to be able to handle this case a bit more cleanly, so please update to the 6.99.14.3 prerelease. In that release, in your demo: show older man normal at easeinleft_transform show expression AlphaMask("shadows", At("older man normal", easeinleft_transform)) as mask will wo...
