Re: Making a Custom Transition Using .png Images?

I've tried this, but the problem I have now is that the transition replaces the backgrounds with the .png files, instead of placing the .png files on top of the scenes. Any advice? #Custom transition: transform customtrans (new_widget, old_widget): delay 4.5 contains: old_widget "images/backgrounds/...

Re: Bust/side image throughout..yay or nay?

It depends on the visual novel. Most of my VNs don't have a side image. Instead, the player character is shown in the scene with the other characters. This is because I feel more comfortable with this presentation (it's more similar to a storyboard for a film than using a side image). However, with ...

Re: Making a Custom Transition Using .png Images?

I've been doing some more experimenting, and I've learned that I can define this as a custom image rather than a transition: image customin: "images/backgrounds/transition_1.png" pause .2 "images/backgrounds/transition_2.png" pause .2 "images/backgrounds/transition_3.png" pause .2 "images/background...

Re: Handling the typical bland protagonist

I think you should think about good bland protagonist you like and ask yourself why you like them. For me, I really like Tintin. He's the protagonist from the graphic novel series The Adventures of Tintin . There's a good wiki page about Tintin as a character, but I'll quote some snippets below to m...

Re: What are the big NOs of writing

The only hard rule I could think of is "don't write something you hate". Write what you love, the rest comes naturally with time and experience. For every choice you make, you lose some readers and gain others. ^^^ I absolutely agree with this. As the expression goes, "a story written without joy w...

Re: Keeping things clean and organised

I first write my entire dialogue script in Word 2013, and I separate each of my scenes in collapsible headers. Each header has its own title, like #1-Kitchen, #2-Garden, etc. Then I take all that, and copy-paste it into Editra. If I need to go refer back to a specific part, I'll search an exact sent...

Re: Any ideas to incentivize a protagonist to play RSP?

Idea 1) You could take "Rock-Paper-Scissors" and translate it to "Fire-Water-Earth", similar to games like Pokémon and Pocket Mortys. This structure is known as "Elemental Rock-Paper-Scissors." Each of the three Elemental Powers (or whatever you choose to change RSP into) have different strengths an...

Re: Should we try to fundraise?

I would recommend that you try completing another, smaller visual novel that you can complete on a shoestring budget, rather than Kickstart/fundraise your first-ever visual novel. The first VN you make is usually your hardest because you're starting from the very beginning, from the ground up. Crowd...

Creating 360 Degree Videos?

I've been seeing more and more 360° videos on YouTube, where you can move the camera around. But how are they created? The only method I've come across so far is using a panoramic camera in Blender (a free 3D animation program). But are there other programs that allow you to create 360° videos? Exam...

.strip() only removes spaces from the beginning and the end. Spaces in the middle of the string are untouched. You need .replace(" ", "") instead to replace all spaces with nothing.
Ah, thank you!

(Solved) "Name Your Character" Script Not Removing Spaces Properly

I'm using this (old) tutorial to let the player choose the name of a character, but the .strip() instruction is not removing spaces typed by the player. Meaning the player can now type in a first AND last name, which is not what I want. Any advice on how I can stop the player from using spaces? Or a...

Your Daily Routine as a Creator?

I recently read a book called Daily Rituals : How Artists Work by Mason Currey. It's a collection of artists, writers, and other famous creators explaining the daily routines they use to be productive. There's also a blog version of it you can check out. Summary/Blurb of the book: "How artists work,...

I always felt like "?!" is more like a question with exclamation undertones and "!?" is more like an exclamation with questioning undertones
"?!" is what I use too, since generally, the reader needs to know that a sentence is a "question" first and a "shout" second.
