Re: Leaving GUI for last?

There's not hard-and-fast rule to what order you "should" create assets for your visual novel, but you should at least have some idea of the GUI's placemen and size, because that will effect other aspects of production. For example, how big the textbox is, and how transparent it is will effect what ...

Re: Adding an AlphaMask to a Character Sprite? [Solved]

I just got to play through this, Thanks Katy133. I learned a lot! I feel like I still need to learn more about AlphaMasks, when you use them, the various things you can do with them, that sort of thing. But this is a great start! Thanks! ETA: Katy133...actually I have a request...which you can igno...

Re: Writing Courtroom Trials

I think a good piece of advice with writing a fair play mystery game is Justin Alexander's Three Clue Rule. Basically, the Three Clue Rule is this: "For any conclusion you want the PCs to make, include at least three clues." An example of using this in an Ace Attorney-inspired game would be this: (1...

Noir-Style Shadow/Lighting Effects

I got help on how to do this in another thread, so I thought I'd share what I learned here. Basically, the code allows you to do this: wOCJRwpi5bc It uses Alpha Masks to add lighting or shadows on top of sprites. Similar to a noir film. Tutorial script I used: define s = Character("Sylvie") transfor...

Wow! Could you post a zip of the actual test project so I could study the image files? I don’t completely have Alpha Mask settled in my mind and would love to see the actual art files. I might finally get it!
Sure, I've attached it to this post. :D

Katy133, could you post a quick video clip of what your animation looks like? Sure! wOCJRwpi5bc Tutorial script I used: define s = Character("Sylvie") transform easeinleft_transform: offscreenleft easein 1.0 left transform easeinright_transform: offscreenright easein 1.0 right transform gocenter_tr...

Re: Adding an AlphaMask to a Character Sprite?

Okay, I've modified Ren'Py to be able to handle this case a bit more cleanly, so please update to the 6.99.14.3 prerelease. In that release, in your demo: show older man normal at easeinleft_transform show expression AlphaMask("shadows", At("older man normal", easeinleft_transform)) as mask will wo...

Re: Video Editing Software Recommendations?

Quick update: I'm currently using a free editing program called Kdenlive, and it's so far been very useful, easy-to-use, and doesn't freeze like OpenShot did. Kdenlive also includes different effects that you can drag-and-drop onto your video clips. I recommend it. Here are two videos I've edited us...

Re: Panorama Backgrounds. Designing a Circular Room Help?

I posted a thread about this earlier, and I have this insight on panoramics: 1) If you want the viewpoint character standing in the very centre of a circular room, then the walls are going to be the same height, as the walls meeting the floor are going to be parallel to the horizon line (the horizon...

Can you put this together as a demo and sent it to me? This should basically work, but the definition of images matter.
Sure. I've attached it here.

If you need me to send it to you using another method, or need anything else, please let me know.

Will Ren'Py VNs Become Compatible with Nintendo Switch?

With more news of Nintendo pushing to approach indie developers (calling these games "Nindies"), and Ren'Py becoming compatible with Unity (the latter being compatible with Nintendo Switch)...

... Will Ren'Py visual novel developers be able to make VNs compatible with Nintendo Switch?

Re: Adding an AlphaMask to a Character Sprite?

I'd assume you'd want shadows.png to be transparent enough that the sprite can shine through. In my example, the shadows layer should stay put - yours is very different, and shouldn't be expected to work, since you're moving everything, not just the mask. I've tried: show expression AlphaMask("shad...

Re: Adding an AlphaMask to a Character Sprite?

The last line is the interesting one, and what it does is to show an alphamask with the shadows image as the color displayable, and the moving character art as the mask displayable. I haven't tried it, since I don't have your images, so let me know if it works. After some more experimenting, I was ...

If you're looking for inspiration, you may want to check out the free online game, Grace's Diary . It's a visual novel that was made for Jennifer Ann's Group, which hosts a yearly game jam to raise awareness on teen dating violence. I've played Grace's Diary, and that made me interested in your game...

Adding an AlphaMask to a Character Sprite? [Solved]

I'm trying to use an AlphaMask to overlay shadows on top of a character sprite that enters and exits the screen (ie: moves across the screen). The images are as follows, layered in this order: shadows.png (a semi-transparent image of dark patches/shadows. It's the same dimensions as the background) ...
