Re: How do you avoid "convenient" or "coincidental" plotting

Back up and look at the bigger picture here. The question is "why," not "how." If you're trying to introduce a plot element, make something happen in a scene, have a character do a thing, or really write any damn thing into your story, the most important question you need to answ...

Re: Word Count!

what's the word count of your game? Using the lint tool, that is. I keep the entire story in documents which are separate from the game code, so wordcount is easy to calculate. Deirdre, My Blade stands at just shy of 156k words after editing in the main story alone. Extra content will probably push...

Re: Beware of "pigionsdeliver" - review

If you want to run a project, your management method needs to be capable of withstanding sudden personnel changes. You should be keeping backups of all of your project content, and you should use a directory which allows for reverting documents to previous conditions in the way that Google Drive doe...

Re: Enticing players to do something for extras in game

Your audience is already giving you, at a minimum, their time and attention. If your product is for sale, they are giving you money as well.

What you are giving them in return for this is an entertaining experience. The audience are not your servants, you are theirs.

The surest way to determine exactly what you need is to parse through your script and use it to build your asset lists.

Re: I am making a visual novel that borrows all it's assets.

You're putting a lot of thought and effort into using copyrighted assets. If you put a third of that energy into developing your own, you'd be there already. If you think it's demoralizing now just being told not to play games with the law, think of how crushing it would be to have your whole projec...

Re: I am making a visual novel that borrows all it's assets.

You wouldn't even have the rights to build your own versions of the assets which belong to someone else's IP. Chrono Trigger Resurrection was squashed even though all of the assets were original, because they were all of an IP owned by Nintendo, and similar projects have received cease-and-desist or...

Re: Best way to start recruiting? - Keeping a team together?

Hmm. I'd like to see how that works in ADV, would you be able to tell who is speaking? There are two angles on this: prose and VN. From a strictly literary standpoint, ensuring that the audience knows who is speaking is a factor of the writer's skill in a text-only format. Traditionally, you use di...

Re: Best way to start recruiting? - Keeping a team together?

RotGtIE - I'm curious is there a reason that you write in novel format first instead of a screenplay first? It's a better practice. For the author, writing without also trying to build all the screenplay directions puts you in the mindset of the novelist and forces you to be attentive to nothing bu...

Re: VN's Without Narration

Hell, there's already School Days if you really want to get into classifying "low-budget anime for your PC/Vita" as a Visual Novel. Most gamers wouldn't even consider VNs to qualify as video games, either. It's a bit awkward that there isn't a distinct category to describe "anime for ...

Re: VN's Without Narration

Good thing the OP is making a video game rather than writing a book, eh? Which means they can do no narration if they don't want to. Why stop there? Let's go ahead with that idea about a Visual Novel with no text at all while we're at it. You know what? I think I like your idea. I'm going to apply ...

Re: VN's Without Narration

Everything about your approach is wrong, your justification reads like a post-hoc rationalization, and your execution is poor enough that it comes as no surprise that you would want to rationalize it. Having primed everyone against my response, I will now waste my time explaining my short answer. Fi...

Re: Tips for a first timer

I would advise against a focus on team building. Focus instead on defining objectives, then set about accomplishing those objectives. People come and go, especially in indie development. Your production method should account for that in order to withstand the going.
