Re: Do any of you use real life images in your games?

Yeah, I do a ton. There's nothing stopping you from making a totally photorealistic game in Ren'Py: I did it for Crunchy Lunch , Carrying a Microwave Down 3rd Ave , and Solidarity Forever . It's sort of like FMV... except with no full-motion or video. If a photo is public domain or you take it yours...

Re: What is your process for writing a visual novel?

Some people add an outlining tool (like Twine). But my setup is basically the same as yours. I invented a studio name for itch/steam because there was no one to stop me, lol, but it’s not a requirement. I figured I usually use some Creative Commons or public domain assets, so a studio name kinda mad...

Re: Animation gradual speeding

Do you want it to slow based on time passed or based on the player's position in the dialogue? If the dialogue is in multiple lines, you could just define multiple, increasingly fast versions of the animation (i.e., "animation normal", "animation fast", "animation faster&quo...

Re: Animated Characters in Ren'Py?

It's kind of a pain, but one other option that might be worth looking into is rendering your animation frame by frame as pngs (or webp) and coding it as an Image Statement With ATL Block: https://www.renpy.org/doc/html/atl.html#image-statement-with-atl-block You can combine this with Layered Images ...

Re: Promoting your VN with the customer journey

Interesting theory! I've seen similar-ish flowcharts in other videos but this is one of the clearer versions of it I've seen. It also definitely helps to see someone focusing specifically about VNs, since even though they're kinda part of the indie game market, they're also simultaneously kinda thei...

Re: How (Not) To Make Money As a Solo Dev

I think it may, although I'm not really sure. I've yet to be able to turn up the one review on Google. (Although I *have* been able to turn up the Steam storefront.) And the one person who did a Let's Play had something like 25 views of his video. (Ouch.) I'm not sure any of it screams "legiti...

Re: How (Not) To Make Money As a Solo Dev

I did have a fair amount of luck with sending Steam Keys out to reviewers. Not ALL reviewed the game, but at least *some* did, which meant that my game, at least, had a few reviews (which assumedly went out to their followers). It also means that my game ended up with at least *some* content on its...

How (Not) To Make Money As a Solo Dev

Hey! I'm a long-ish time solo dev who has mostly released free games but has also tried a couple of commercial projects. I was thinking lately about what went right and what went wrong with my first commercial project , and I was wondering what others' experiences have been. The TL;DR of that essay ...

Hey, just wanted to post a quick update! A new expansion for this game just came out today. If you already own it on itch.io, the update is free. You can also buy it there for a 10% discount or on Steam (where it's available for the first time, also for a 10% discount).

Mammon wrote: Sat Apr 21, 2018 12:21 pm A real unique and fun game, hooking me right away by being so different from the average VN. And the story too was so simple yet relateable and funny. Really enjoyed playing this!
Thanks, Mammon! :) I've always really enjoyed trying to take simple ideas and then execute them well!
