Have you checked Andrew Loomis' (free) books? His style might look old to some but his lessons are timeless and he's a very good instructor.

Here are a few of his books (download complete books):

Re: Freeware Game Creation Engines
Just for the record, here are some more that are free but I wouldn't recommend for various reasons. I'm writing this off the top of my head and from memory so take it for what it's worth. Wintermute Engine Point and click adventure maker. Seems pretty powerful. Current version 1.9.1 was released on ...

Re: Freeware Game Creation Engines
FlashDevelop is actually much better in this regard as it's an IDE. For example it has all kinds of toolbars that show you new stuff as you add it in the code (can't find a video that shows it nicely - it has to be seen anyway), built in file browser with lots of functions, help... and million of ot...

Re: Freeware Game Creation Engines
It's probably worth mentioning that one can freely develop games for Flash too, although (obviously) not using Flash CS5 or older incarnations, but something like FlashDevelop (Windows only - here's how to set it up) instead... Also there's a free version of Unity3D (Mac, Windows). Monkey (successor...

Re: Ren'Py in the Browser
Works for me (using Chrome). Ping time: 248 ms (spikes to 800 occasionally). From the description of how it works and from playing the demo I got the impression that it's barely usable even for the most straightforward VNs with a bit of branching (without any music or sound effects whatsoever). Mayb...

Re: 6.12.2: Text Handling
Correct me if I'm wrong, but Ren'Py does not offer any control over leading ? I have looked in the demo and searched all the help files I could get my hands on, but it's not even mentioned anywhere. The reason why I'd like to see support for leading is because it can be of great help when designing i...

Re: My video won't play...
Is this video the only one that doesn't play (have you tried other videos)? Try playing the video in the demo that comes with Ren'Py - does that one work? For me even the video in the demo doesn't play correctly when it's in fullscreen (only when it's small, behind Eileen) - although my computer has...

Re: What dialects of Basic do you "speak"?
Actually... contrary to what I thought due to not using BASIC for so long, it seems BASIC can still be useful - I just took a cursory glance at BlitzMAX (60€), DarkBasic (?€)and PlayBasic (learning edition:free; pro 15€?) developing environments (which, unless I misunderstood something, are connecte...

Re: What tabs do you always keep open?
During the working hours I usually keep my mail open at all times because I have to. Generally speaking I try to close the tabs I don't use.
Other tabs likely to appear in my browser window are pretty mixed... according to Chrome my most often visited place is Lemmasoft forums.

Re: What dialects of Basic do you "speak"?
I've used: Commodore Basic Amiga Basic (even wrote a short adventure game in it! I remember there was a puzzle where you had to poison a dog in order to get a knife and use it to cut a rope... so an item hanging from the ceiling would appear... somewhere? I was around 15 ^^;;) If I had time / could,...

I get the black screen even in the inbuilt tutorial. It plays normally when it's small (behind Eileen) though.

Re: Sketchup BG critique needed
... Uncle Mugen is here to help! :) ... "POOF" (Disappears) An additional step can also be to keep the shadows as an alpha channel of a color chip layer, this way it's easy to have colored shadows and lighting. I also think adding a slightly cartoony treatment to it helps it integrate it ...

Re: Snowflower's Otome Game Life
There's another game recently released that's made by the people who made Other Age. It's called X Note, I really love the art and music in it. Here's the demo. :D Played it and it's really awesome~ I would buy it if I wasn't so broke ;_; I played it a few days ago, it's really nice. The protagonis...
