Present tense is the most common tense used in visual novels.
If you're writing in first person, looking at the characters on screen is like looking through the main character's eyes. In this case, I would recommend present tense, because it adds to the sense that events are happening 'now'.

Re: [OPEN] Looking for team members for Fading Skies [BxG]
How many songs do you think you might need? I've looked at a similar length VN, and it has 20 tracks, each around 2:30 minutes. That seems a bit much to me, but I don't want to underestimate, so let's say around 15 tracks of the same length. This would likely be done over several months, and potent...

Re: Do you doubt your writing?
I agree with doodlemancy in that your doubt is a good thing – you aren't just passing off your work as perfect, and because of this, you're able to see ways you can improve. This is important; no writer is perfect, and seeing these flaws is the first step to overcoming them. I also agree with ghostp...

Re: Coming-Out Simulator
So after starting to post, I realised how old this thread actually was, but I think it's worth a bump. I agree with Taleweaver: it's a really good piece of writing, and writers (myself included) definitely have things to learn from this. In addition to putting across a message, I'd say it's also a g...

Re: Verbosity in Visual Novels
This is definitely something I've noticed, and I'm glad it's not just me that feels this way. So many VNs (both originally Japanese and English) have so many long, unnecessary scenes that don't contribute to the story, and it definitely is tedious to wade through them. I don't know for sure, but bot...

Re: Why so many unfinished VN?
I think it's a combination of the reasons that everyone's mentioned. - Inexperience and not understanding the workload required - Discouragement from a lack of feedback and interest - Life and other commitments On the topic of game jams and assorting teams together: I like the idea of forming teams ...

Re: The VN or The KN?
I agree with many people in this thread; KNs are easier to write to create a strong, unified story, and that's why it's nice to read them. I think that if you're not set up to expect to be able to change the outcome, then a KN is completely fine. It's only when you have an expectation that it's goin...

Re: How to make a good "you" protagonist
I think when you're developing something like this, you have to define your boundaries. You can't cover every response possible to a choice, but you could probably work with (just an example) 3 main approaches, e.g. Utilitarian (ends justify means), deontological (ethics based on following certain r...

Re: Which romantic scenes would you like or expect to have c
I think whether to put in a CG is less about the content and more about the importance of the moment in the story. For example, if you've got two characters that are kissing every five minutes, then it seems less appropriate to put one instance in a CG. However, if it's the moment when two character...
