Re: Do you write a VN like a novel or a screenplay?

I think they are best written similarly to a screenplay with notes indicating asset usage (BGs/CG/Sprite) and any other notes concerning what should appear on the screen. Prose description is often a lot of wasted output unless you are writing in NVL format. I think writing it like a novel just adds...

Re: Critique My Short Story

I would say that this is a good foundation for you to keep building off of and that the more you create the sharper and stronger it will get. There are a lot of technical errors and incorrect idioms. Improving your editing will eliminate some of these mistakes and raise the quality of your work. 1) ...

Re: The Great American Visual Novel

What follows is a lot of generalizations. These are things that I feel are worth mentioning. 1a) Cars. In Japanese stories driving scenes happen rarely-- people walk from one place to another or take trains. American society is mostly a car based society. Cars can be omitted in Japanese stories due ...

Re: Do you hate your writing?

I did when I was younger, but things changed as I grew older. I will say something that many on this board will not want to hear: young writers are underdeveloped, by and large. And by young I mean fourteen to twenty four years of age. I want to emphasize that this is actually a good thing-- it mean...

Re: First time VN storywriter! (Critiques welcome!)

Welcome to writing visual novels. I hope you have enjoyed writing it thus far. Some questions: Why Japan? Have you been there? A lot of people pick Japan as a setting because they have seen it in visual novels or anime, but it can be hard to connect to and make it feel realistic if you have never be...

Re: female mc persona questions

Female main characters written by young adults and teenagers is that they always seem to be "outsiders" or unsociable people. Often these characters are "pretty" but mysteriously do not have friends or are awkward/clumsy, but only at a level that serves to make them adorable. Avo...

Re: Best ways of delivering exposition?

My thoughts are that you want to sneak in exposition and immerse it in action or activity. A great example is in the first book of Harry Potter. As they ride the Hogwarts Express they are eating Chocolate Frogs, one of which has a card that provides some exposition on Albus Dumbledore and briefly me...

Re: How should I explain magic?

I'll quote a popular meme "it's magic, I ain't gotta explain shit." Unless the explanation of how it works is particularly important try to avoid explaining it. If the story demands that you explain it, then you the author need to have some idea of how magic operates in your world. You sho...

Re: Bitter Truth [Romance/Slice of Life/Otome] [GxB/G]

1. I like that the character is already in a relationship at the beginning of the story, I think it's much more interesting and realistic. You may struggle with that relationship on explaining physical intimacy (or lack thereof). People in relationships hold hands, kiss, and generally do other thing...
