Re: Commission review system?

Rating systems have the problem that their reliability is a function of the sample size. When a service only receives a small number of reviews (as is likely to happen in as small a community as this), then the reviews are going to necessarily be unreliable. For instance, if you're browsing Yelp and...

Re: What pairing would you like to see more of?

There's not any one pairing I want to see more of, I just want to see less of GxB. So, I guess, everything but that.

Re: What would you say to first time game creators?

You can cherry pick counter-examples, but I said it was true in the general case, not in every case. It is an unfortunate reality but not one we should hide from beginning creators. While yes, I think we should encourage more diverse art styles, I think it's an expectation new creators should be awa...

Re: What would you say to first time game creators?

On the contrary, if you want anyone to play your game, your art style has to be anime/manga. O...kay? I can't tell if you're joking or not, but I don't think that's something that first timers who have an interest in VNs, but not necessarily the art style would like to read. If anything, there ough...

Re: What would you say to first time game creators?

I'll take it a step further:

Your first ten games should not be more than an hour long. Ideally, they should not be more than 20 minutes long. You have no idea how much effort it takes to even make a game that long. You will make more mistakes than you can count. Make them on an easy project.

Re: New Term for Visual Novels? [split]

What's the difference between a "screen novel" and an ebook? "Screen novel" implies anything you read on a screen.

Re: New Term for Visual Novels? [split]

Aren't ebooks digital storytelling? And streaming movies, too? The difference is that the story isn't told through the digital medium, it just utilizes it. There were both books and movies before computers existed, but the type of storytelling Half-life and Portal use ise entirely dependent on bein...

EDIT: So that I'm not just being purely contrarian here, I personally feel that "kinetic novel" is the most accurate descriptor for the genre.

Re: PR nightmare: When indie devs are attacked

I'm sorry, but every time I hear people say to just have thick skin or ignore it, I want to bang my head. Even if they are trying to be positive in their critique, there's only so much you can take before it gets to you. “When they (critics) insult you, and they become the straw that broke the came...

Who suggested that you have to be an asshole to stop trolls? I'm not sure who you're arguing against.

Re: PR nightmare: When indie devs are attacked

I think it's a little ridiculous, however, to claim that "you have to be an asshole" or "you have to be socially maladapted" to want to make games. Sure, uncompromising people might make better games, but this speaks to the fact that game development is still out of reach to all...

Re: PR nightmare: When indie devs are attacked

In my experience, that will just make matters worse. If you respond to them in any way whatsoever, they will take the opportunity to attack you more and louder because they know you'll respond, which means that they know you read what they said. They don't care about the truth. If you correct them,...

Re: PR nightmare: When indie devs are attacked

I've gotten enough harassment/hate mail/death threats in the years since I've been making games to fill a novel with. What I've come to understand from them is that the best way to respond to misinformation spread by trolls is to counter with the truth---and only the truth. There's no need to get in...
