We really need a glossary for all these abbreviations...
SoL typically stands for slice of life, which means the story is generally focused on the daily life of several characters.

Re: NaNoReno 2018 General Recruitment Thread

I'm up for offering writing services to a team for this year's NanoReno. - Have a preference for fantasy and science fiction writing, though can also write slice of life and would be interested in writing romance - Much more comfortable writing from a BxG perspective, simply because I'm a heterosexu...

Re: School Shooting VN

What do you mean by a very specific path though? If this is a self-insert of myself, why would I WANT to go down the path where I become the school shooter? Why would it take only the events of a few days to craft a blank character into having the mindset of someone willing to commit mass murder? Th...

Re: Climaxes and Player Knowledge

I am thinking now that if I cause uncertainty in the player about which ending his choices have driven him towards, it'll yank him out of any sort of immersion. So, then a player should know exactly which choices lead to which endings. But, hold a moment. In order for the player to know which choic...

Re: Climaxes and Player Knowledge

As said before, a lot of bad choices are usually as clear as day to the player, or if they aren't the game structure makes it obvious anyway (for example, a VN I played recently called Crescendo had all of the options which positively progressed the route be the bottom-most choice available at every...

Re: Character Development Timing

P.S. A Fate fan will always disagree with this wholeheartedly, but I say you could watch Fate/Zero despite not having seen Fate/Stay Night. I too found Fate/Stay Night too boring, and liked the 'boring first episode' where Zero recaps everything you need to know about the show. You can watch that o...

Re: Planning vs improvising

I'm used to just purely winging it, but for a VN which relies heavily on the structure of choices and such I suggest having at the very least an outline of each route and how they branch from one another. On the opposing side, planning everything and leaving no room for improvisation can be quite st...

Re: A Kinetic VN

I'll add onto this by saying that as someone who had no coding experience before Ren'Py it is quite easy to get into and learn. Alternatively though, you could download the Fungus plugin for the Unity engine if you absolutely want to avoid coding. It's a drag and drop interface added onto the Unity ...

Re: Can RenPy read the players data? (Name)

I don't know how to implement it myself, but it definitely is possible. Doki Doki literature Club is a very recent example of a Ren'Py game using that.

Re: The youngest romancing character for VN/dating sim

I mean, let's be honest, a lot of Japanese VNs have characters around that age or even younger in sexual situations but get around it by saying they're 18 (even when the game explicitly states they aren't). I'm not a big fan of it when it's mainly just overtly sexual, specifically lolis, but from th...

Re: Changing Art Styles in a Sequel

I think something to keep in mind is that VNs are just as focused on the visuals as the story in most cases. It's one thing for a returning artist to further evolve their artstyle between games or releases in a series. But, to completely change the artstyle, direction and even artist in between two ...
