Re: Game genre of VN games - ???

Perhaps because VN doesn't have any gameplay? Oh but clicking through dialog trees is gameplay! Of sorts ;) I know people who got interested in VNs through Bioware RPGs, so I'm kind of being serious. They did not enjoy the combat and/or the RPG elements (to be honest, Mass Effect 2 doesn't have muc...

Re: [NaNoRenO] [WIP] Amesirun

April was quite hectic for me, but I still managed to work on the game (not as much as I'd have liked though ^^;), here's another small teaser. As I'm saying there, the game is close to completion, I've added some features not originally planned to compensate a bit for the delay.

Re: Nightlinker's Video Game Rant.

I tend to agree with Jake on this... Also, where I'm from (Hungary), for a long time - before widespread internet connections - games were relatively hard to get, so this already filtered out the bad games in more than one sense. The ones I got to play as a kid were already the cream of the crop, si...

Re: Computer pet peeves

What I really really hate is when a piece of software (including the OS) doesn't want to tell me what went wrong. I understand most users hate seeing complicated error messages and logs and suchlike, so I'm ok with these being hidden by default... but when I cannot even get them to display , or have...

Re: First person writing

Not necessarily relevant to VNs in particular, but I like Samuel Delany's advice that you should only write in first person when your character has an interesting voice.

FYI here is the actual NASA image license. (It's quite permissive.)

Re: Sprites....

Expressions.. only do as many as you need. The World Ends with You RPG on the DS only had 4 expressions for each character. I don't think so... (are you sure you're talking about the right game?) Here are sprite rips: http://sdb.drshnaps.com/objects/2/87/Sprite/MugshotsNeku-ItsAWonderfulWorld.gif h...

Re: WIP: The Foundation of the World

Ugh, I'm sorry, the past week has been crazy. Every year I start Pesach preparations well in advance. And every year this happens! I mostly finished my preparations, but I haven't had time to log in to the forums and post replies. OK. Was Yiddish a common language around those times? This depends on...

Re: [NaNoRenO] [WIP] Amesirun

Thank you everyone for your kind replies!!! I unfortunately have to say that I will not be able to make the deadline unless something unexpected happens... I ran out of time with work and (especially) Pesach preparations at hand. The game is about two-thirds finished, but I haven't touched it in mor...

Re: WIP: The Foundation of the World

Oh, yes! During which few decades was there a big migration to America? Hard to say, because in many cases the ethnicity of Hungarians was not recorded in detail. Still, I found data on a wave of Jewish migration starting from the 1880s lasting halfway through the 1910s. Then another one starting f...

Re: List software you use here

Most of what I use has already been mentioned save for this one... I use ArtRage for sketching, it has a free demo but I bought the full version after trying the demo. It's available for Windows and Macs, but 2.5 runs under Linux using Wine very smoothly. I haven't tried getting 3.0 to work under Li...

And it won't protect you against problems like the US legal system's apparent encouragement of frivolous lawsuits This is what I'm talking about. (Not only in the US FWIW, I'd say there is a trend toward this in the entire Western world.) Copyright is a mechanism put in place to prevent people unfa...

Re: Any general suggestion for a first time VN writer?

I think we simply come to this from different perspectives. If you are selling stories, then you need to make sure you don't infringe on anyone's copyrights, or risk a legal procedure. (Hopefully your editor will notice. But s/he might not. Or you might not have an editor, for example, if you make a...

Re: Any general suggestion for a first time VN writer?

Don't hide from all forms of media, but going out of your way to find examples of works which are thematically, stylistically or superficially similar to yours is just going to make you more paranoid about your work being similar to other people's I don't think a quick check on TVtropes would make ...

Re: Any general suggestion for a first time VN writer?

just don't blatantly rip anything off and there's no reason to be concerned by it. For the record, I have been accused of blatantly ripping off a novel I've never even read (in a published short story). So it's better to make sure IMO. If you're not attempting to sell anything, it might not be as i...
