Re: When do people start preparing for NaNoRenO?

The thread'll probably be up with a week or so. Some people start recruiting before that, but it's less common.

Re: Question about ratings

Self ratings are essentially useless-oftentimes writers will be too harsh or too light on their work, and the general audience doesn't really care. In fact, ratings in general are unnecessary unless you're publishing to console. In addition, 18+ is for straight, flat-out porn. The only game that got...

Re: I am making a visual novel that borrows all it's assets.

For personal use (i.e. not distributing it,) it's fine. Go crazy. If you were to send it to your friends, you'd start into illegal territory. Admittedly, you probably won't get arrested, but it would violate copyright law. Releasing it on the forums...it's been done. There are some games that use co...

Re: Can a visual novel "without sight" be good

Surprisingly, this has been done before. (H2O: Footprints in the Sand)

I'd personally add sepia tone stock background to both represent the character's "mental map" and to give the player a point of reference, though.

Either way, you'll need some godly sound design to make up for it.

Re: Recommendations for games to learn from

- euphoria (Heavily fetish oriented, and has generally decent ero writing.) If anyone is taking anything from euphoria, it's how not to write ero dialogue: http://puu.sh/sPYUb/71271289b0.jpg It's more comedy gold than actual eroticism. Admittedly, the ero in euphoria in particular is...all over the...

Re: Recommendations for games to learn from

Brief disclaimer: my experience in this field comes mostly from Japanese titles. List ordered by accessibility. - Katawa Shoujo (Ero is well integrated into plot, and if I remember correctly there's some light fetish material in it.) - Song of Saya (You could probably learn some lessons from its wri...

Re: CG in visual novels - Too many or too few?

In all honesty, it doesn't really matter. Of course, for certain scenes (hint: begins with a h and ends with an entai), you'll definitely need CGs, but for anything else, they're really just a bonus. That being said, if you really want to show off your wealth and/or artistic talent, making an entire...

Re: Unusual(?) Branching Routes

It's not that unusual. Kagetsu Tohya, Fate/Hollow Ataraxia, and Cross†Channel, among many others, have done this style. Visual novels are actually infamous for time loops among some circles, thought most Western writers don't use them. To put it simply, you have a lot to write, and a lot of complex ...

Re: Can Ren'Py make a game like this?

Yes. Generally, you can use Ren'Py to make just about anything; the real question is "Is Ren'Py the best option for making a game like this?" Looking into http://www.adventuregamestudio.co.uk/ might be a better idea if you're looking to make a straight Western-style point and click game li...

Re: Question about music

Without information on the game, it's hard to say. Most visual novels have the music playing >80% of the the time, so if you're up to composing that many tracks, then that's fine. Otherwise, you'll need to make sure that the writing's good enough to convey the emotion otherwise conveyed by the music...

Re: Writing long visual novels

The best advice I can give for making branching paths in longer novels is putting choices where you think the player would like to make a choice; if you can't tell, then try to get someone else to read the script for you. Something to keep in mind is that F/SN and Clannad are at the extreme high end...

Unskippable Animations

I'm new to this, so sorry if this is a stupid question. My most recent project, (and my only one currently in development), has some action scenes in it. I was attempting to create a blood splatter effect similar to that seen in doujin games such as Higurashi and Umineko. However, I ran into an issu...
