Re: Which is better: to learn 2D or 3D animation?

Generally a workflow for a 3D model is: model, rig, texture, animate Whereas the flow for 2D would be: draw, ink, color Depending on detail, the first step of creating a 3D model will take just as long as all 3 steps of drawing a 2D figure (if not longer). One important detail: The 3D model is reusa...

Happy 40th birthday, Internet!

You are 40 years old today! How does it feel? Joints creaking yet? I remember when you were just a wee toddler having no more than 4 users connected. Now you have billions. Thank you for transforming modern society.

Re: How much convenience can you stand?

Something I find myself growing increasingly intolerant of these days are coincidences in stories. I didn't think much of them until giving some thought to the structure of VNs. Unlike other formats, VNs tend to follow the daily exploits of the protagonist. So there's usually very little opportunit...

Re: Too Much Worldbuilding?

Pulling from the world of VNs, I'm reminded of the "Nasu-verse". I think one of the biggest failings in Fate Stay Night was Nasu's insistance on explaining the rules of the Grail War, Masters, Maguses, Servants, classes, etc. over and over. Some of that detail was necessary. But I found t...

Yep, not to mention it takes about 2-3x as long as the raster methods.

Re: Overall difficulty of VNs

It is far harder to properly model, rig, and animate a 3D model than it is to draw a picture. It is far harder to hack code and debug than it is to use Ren'py's scripting language This is not to say that making a good VN is easy, but its difficulty is nothing in comparison to making a good video game.

Re: A question about freeware graphic resources.

Whether or not you are selling your game has absolutely no bearing on most free assets. It's pretty rare for it to be a factor, in fact. Not true. Stock often does not allow permission for commercial use. Whether something is "commercial", I personally have found, is a very big factor. Th...

Re: Copyright Infringement? (New problem. See my latest post)

A "character" is copyright.

A character name is not.

Regardless, a party can use the DMCA if they want and it is up to you whether you want to fight it or not.

Naming the character or not doesn't really detract from gameplay for me personally.

Re: Reusing Music from Your Other Projects

As a gamer, I actually appreciate reused (or maybe remixed music). For example: the fanfare in Final Fantasy (I would hate if they changed that anytime soon), or the Tristram theme in Diablo.

Re: Playing Games vs. Making Games

I'm not sure why, but I think part of the reason is that I know if I find an idea I like, I can't do it anymore because it's already been done. Just saying, plot devices exist because they've already been done before. There is nothing wrong in using what other authors or artists have done before you.

Ideal resolution?

I'm thinking ideally it might be 800 x 600 or another 1.33 ratio resolution, but I'm just guessing. Right now, I'm drawing my characters at approximately 6000 pixels in height and it is a LOT of work. Since, the image will eventually be scaled down anyway, I wonder what the most common resolution is...

Re: Need some opinions from experienced game makers.

Alright. I've gotten a pretty good idea of what is to be expected now. Samu-kun brought up something I overlooked, that of partners wanting creative input. As individuals, do you usually like to have a hand in the creative side of the story, none at all or only in certain situations, and if possibl...
