Because it gives people more reasons to buy, if all you care about is how many copies you sell. More value for their money, in a way only games can achieve.

Re: Inspiration for games
My (never completed) visual novel was inspired by a couple of asset packs from Open Game Art. You never know.

Sure, in Before the Faire I used a set of backgrounds made from photos with an effect applied. Worked really well.

Re: What is your process for writing a visual novel?
You don't have to set up any kind of formal organization to publish on itch.io, you can simply do it as yourself. But I couldn't say how to go about it. I've made one third of a visual novel, that came out great but then got bogged down (like much of my fiction does) and stopped there. In any event,...

I just remembered Zelazny's Chronicles of Amber. Another all-time favorite. The viewpoint character even changes mid-series, without missing a beat.

Re: What do you consider a good first-person narrative?
My favorite examples remain Robert Heinlein's classics: Starship Troopers (yes, yes, I know), The Moon is a Harsh Mistress and especially Double Star.

Re: How do you write a plot?
I have much more experience writing static fiction than visual novels or the like, so take this with a grain of salt: You don't build a plot, you grow it. You're basically running a tabletop RPG adventure all in your head, being both GM and every other player at the same time. (That's why writing is...

Re: Is the “it was all a dream” trope generally disliked?
All of the above. Also: Inception is an excellent example of "it's all a dream" done right. Arguably The Matrix , too. Though the former manages to avoid the "your mind makes it real" trope, while the latter leans into it, rather annoyingly. For what it's worth (with apologies fo...

The resident jerk being a viable romantic option to pursue. That perpetuates a harmful stereotype.

So do most Hollywood movies, whether they need it or not, yet it's visual novels who get all the bad rap. Go figure.MapletreePaper wrote: ↑Sun Aug 08, 2021 11:05 am Even non-pornographic VNs tend to have a scenes could be considered risque, depending on your standards.

Re: Licensing/uploading a Ren'Py game on GitHub and itch.io
All open source licenses allow commercial reuse, by definition, as long as the other license terms are followed. Most open source licenses require attribution, but not all. You're probably thinking a Creative Commons Attribution-NonCommercial license, that you can apply to your assets; Ren'Py itself...

Re: How can you judge what is a "reasonable amount of time" to be working on a game?
Project estimation is a dark art. I usually have to multiply my initial figure by three to get near the actual duration. Other colleagues I talked to use a factor of four. Either way, there are always going to be unexpected issues, leading to more unexpected issues, so don't sweat it. Making softwar...

Re: Please help me learn how to run PIP INSTALL.
You got confused. :) pip is a command-line tool, use it from a command prompt or terminal, not from within Python. (It can also be used from within Python because it's really just a Python module, but that's more complicated and another story.) But what are you even doing with pip in the context of ...
