Honestly, I think you can do a lot with just ATL in Ren'Py. Seriously, I have a project listed as "Dummy for Preview Creation," and if you want to use a lot of short gameplay shots, you can just copy and paste code from your actual game into this. Then use software for capturing gameplay like gamers...

It's a store variable, so it's not defined anywhere you'll see in files renpy exposes to you. You can redefine it but that would likely entail making other changes to prevent anything from breaking.
