Re: Sound Design and You

Good post! I think sound design is a hugely underrated element in delivering impactful story. I'm a huge fan of how Danganronpa queues music and how they use sound effects to emphasize certain moments during the class trials. The game is FULL of cool sound effects. I think a lot of the following vid...

Re: How do You Stay Motivated to Complete a VN?

Working with another person (especially in your field) can help you stay motivated - although demotivation is something that'll always pop-up at some point and you just gotta learn to accept that it's going to happen no matter what.

Marketing Your Game on Instagram

Has anyone tried doing that? I don't know if Instagram would be a good marketing platform for PC games, but it might be different for visual novels where the art plays a huge factor. There's also quite a large anime community on Instagram - I don't think it'll be difficult to get the followers, but ...

Re: A Character's Voice

I used to have the same problem as you where my characters are 'textbook perfect,' but they still come across as boring + sounding the same as the rest of the cast. I solved this by giving my characters 'quirks' based on their lifestyle and backstory. A pessimistic character might also be a prankst...

Re: What do you do when it just. doesn't. work?

After rewriting a crucial scene about a dozen times myself, I found a solution that worked pretty well was to change when the scene appeared. This allowed me to completely reimagine the scene in a different view and helped move my project along. So maybe a change of pacing is what is required. Sorr...

Re: What do you do when it just. doesn't. work?

The question is a bit vague. Can you tell us specifically what you think is wrong with the scene? If it's a scene for the sake of exposition, it's best to cut it out and weave it into the other scenes. Not sure if that's it though.

Re: Transitioning from novel writing to vn writing?

VN storytelling is very different to screenwriting and other media. There aren't any good books on how to write a VN so the best way to learn is by making your own whilst playing other VNs to see how they handle the storytelling. The things you have to consider are: -The arrangement of text: decidin...

Re: Small tip for VN devs

I think you're missing the point of prototyping. Writing text is much less resourceful than creating art so that's why it should be done first - in case certain scenes need to be cut out or altered (which will happen a lot as a writer). The art should always come from the writing, not the other way ...

Re: Small tip for VN devs

Don't forget that a prototype should also take art into consideration though. One large aspect of a visual novel is the visual portion, and they are absolutely important when it comes to setting the mood and tone of a scene. Where is the sprite positioned? Is it moving or static? Which facial expre...
