Re: Why do YOU like/play/read/make VNs & Kinetic Novels?
I like VNs because it's like all my favorite things had a baby together. I like anime, and VNs usually use that art style. I like choose your own adventure books, and visual novels usually offer multiple endings. I like videogames, and a VN is a type of videogame that shares enough in common with mo...

Re: How to Write Good Choices: A Guide
Your first type of "life or death" / story fork choice are what I feel most if not all of the choices in a game should be, as the other types of choices just don't feel meaningful to me as a player. Take your 2nd points based approach for example, which are commonly featured in dating sims...

Re: Is the “it was all a dream” trope generally disliked?
I've seen "Can the { it was all a dream } trope be done well" question come up a lot in various places, and my thoughts were always "probably not, but I'm hesitant to give a hard no without actually experiencing it for myself." Having recently played a game that that did it thoug...

Re: What are some things you hate about romantic Visual Novels??
I dislike how the plot always seems to go common route - character route - good or bad end, with choices making little difference except accumulating hidden points to determine your character route and then ending respectively. I guess I'm too spoiled by the old "choose your own adventure"...

Re: Games You Want to Play
If you liked Squid Game there are quite a few "death game" VNs aside from Danganropa, though most generally still have characters in the teen to young adult range. Examples include The Zero Escape franchise, Exit/Corners , and Remember, Remember. What I want is a VN similar to The Ember Kn...

Re: Should I release incomplete visual novel now?
There's a difference between a demo and a prototype. A demo demo usually comes a year or two before release, contains the first hour or so of gameplay, and is mostly polished to completion. A prototype on the other hand is more of a proof of concept which may contain placeholder assets and have the ...

Re: Q. Save and Q. Load: Useful or Redundant?
I never use them, and honestly don't see their purpose unless you don't want the player to have access to the regular save & load menus for some reason. I've never found having to access a menu to be 'immersion breaking' so no, I wouldn't miss it.

Re: Chapter vs. Whole Game Release
can you imagine if you were expected to pay to read each individual chapter of a novel? I can as many novels were released this way. :) (Think Dickens) Love it or hate it, serial releases do have a long history behind them. (I also read a lot of comics which also tend to be released serially.) That...

Re: Chapter vs. Whole Game Release
I do not buy episodic releases. Even if the game looks interesting I will wait until it's finished at which point the chapters are often put together in a bundle which saves tons of money in the long run. But many episodic games never actually get finished. The plot also tends to feel less cohesive ...

Re: What questions would you like to ask other visual novel creators?
Hi everybody, I am writing a thesis about visual novel creation. Actually, I am not a really experienced person in visual novels creation and stuff, but things ended up the way they did. My supervisor says that I should conduct an interview/questionnaire to visual novel creators. Are there any idea...

Re: How can I build a VN development team?
If you are unwilling or unable to pay upfront for work you're going to have a much harder time. Getting people to work under a revenue share model is difficult as X% of $0 is still $0, and people want to be fairly compensated for their time and effort even if your game flops or never gets completed....

What happened to to the "Hello Hello" website?
This is the website in question: http://hellohello.dousetsu.com/ It had a great variety of free to use backgrounds, one of which I'm using in a project of mine. I went to link back to the website to give credit where credit is due, and discovered all of the links on the site seem to be broken and ju...

Re: Are there any creator that manages to live off of their Visual Novels output? If yes, who?
This is something I've wanted to know too, but most VN devs seem to be very secretive with exactly how much their games make. It's frustrating because this isn't something I've encountered with more mainstream professions; most people are happy to give you something like "My job is X, I've been...

Re: Do you think there is a market for non-anime visual novels?
Do you prefer Japanese or foreign made (even if Asian) vns? I prefer OELVNs (Original English Language Visual Novels) because I find they tend to cater to more of my preferences. They are more likely to be free (or at least have a free demo), they are less likely to have a high school setting, and ...

Re: Free vs Paid Visual Novels
I've heard a few people say that charging for your game makes it more likely people will play it (as if it cost money it must be good, while something that's free must be poor quality) but I disagree with that completely. I am far more likely to play a free game as it won't cost me anything, whereas...
