Thanks! It's a bit out of date now so I'm not sure how useful it still is, but I'm glad you enjoyed reading it.

Ah thanks! That'll be what it's picking up then. I didn't notice it as the title didn't make mention of Homestruck.

Re: Analysis of Steam VN user reviews

These are important and interesting results and all but I'm laughing my ass off over "homestuck" in the bottom right of the EVN graph. Haha yeah I'm curious why people are mentioning that. AFAIK Homestuck was kind of famous for having kickstarted a game that never got released, but it was...

Re: Analysis of Steam VN user reviews

@Gery Haha yeah I loved some of the misspellings. Both "recommend" and "reccommend" made it into one of the charts about equally, which made me feel a little better because I've fallen into using the misspelt "reccommend" more than a few times. I think "kinetic&quo...

Analysis of Steam VN user reviews

https://i.imgur.com/6YXPGNz.png If the quote “our language is the reflection of ourselves” is true, then what could we learn from Steam user reviews (other than that we deserve every bad game ever published there)? I thought it’d be fun to generate some word clouds of Steam VN user reviews: what wo...

Re: Analysing EVN and JVN fans on Steam

I think this is very important. I am an EVN fan...but if you looked at my Steam profile (which I have no idea if it is public or not...it probably isn't)...you won't see many VNs. Because I get my VNs primarily from lemmasoft and itch.io. I can't imagine I'm the only one for whom that is the case. ...

Analysing EVN and JVN fans on Steam

https://i.imgur.com/ZUqE0rG.png To what extent do JVN and EVN fans on Steam overlap? How many VNs do they buy? Who spends more? Which fandom is more elitist? As an update to my last analysis post on VN sales on Steam, I trawled 100k Steam profiles to find out. Here are my results~ Data collection a...

Re: The state of VNs on Steam

There is a somewhat complicated relationship between some fans in the west and Japanese pop culture that borders on mythologizing in some cases. The 'legend' of a title has YEARS of word of mouth. A lot of us can remember a time when ANY visual novel (ren'ai game / dating sim / we didn't have solid...

The state of VNs on Steam

https://i.imgur.com/MGTMvsv.png I’ve recently read a few thoughtful discussion threads on the state of the VN market here in the West. Some taking a negative stance , some with a more positive outlook . I thought I’d try to put some numbers on these statements and look at VN ownership on Steam, sti...

Re: New VN recommendation site launched

I just wanted to give a little update that we've added content warning filter options to the quiz along with several other little tweaks and additions (like mac and linux platform options). We're planning to start adding new VNs to the list in batches each month, so if there any suggestions for addi...

Haha yeah I'd consider them to have gotten the active/passive combo wrong for cowgirl. The one on top really isn't the passive one.

Re: New VN recommendation site launched

Thanks for the kind words everyone! It was quite a lot of work to get this done so it means a lot to see that it's been enjoyed. Do you think in the future you will expand it with more criteria? I like the LGBT+ tag and would be interested in having that broken down further into specific categories ...

New VN recommendation site launched

https://i.imgur.com/Qo5nzJZ.png Our new VN recommendation site just went live! It's more geared towards helping those relatively new to the medium, so the regulars here might not find it terribly useful, but hopefully you might get some use of it. It's at least prettier than VNDB if nothing else. T...

Re: What goes wrong when I try to ask a question

This is why there's a term in programming called rubber duck debugging, where you basically explain your programming problem to an inanimate object, and in the process of doing so, recognise the reason for the problem. It's a pretty common feeling~

Re: Predicting the sexual activity of VN characters

What's the difference between engaging in cowgirl and being subjected to cowgirl? They had opposite results. This is where you enter into the somewhat terrifyingly precise world of VNDB sexual traits tagging. As per the VNDB guideline on it, "Apply this (engages in) trait to the penetrating pa...
