Re: How can I get volunteers to make faster progress on a game?

To be frank, I would only use free labor if it's either someone who can do it well owes me big, or if the thing I'm asking for is disposable. Making a game that relies heavily on volunteer work sounds like a one way street to development hell. When someone's working for free, you have absolutely no ...

Re: Change font to a single word in a sentence

Would it be difficult to create a raster image of the word and insert it in the text string?

Re: How much should you pay a musician?

I did a bit of Googling and searching r/gamedev on Reddit and $25 doesn't seem to buy you even one minute :/

It looks like rates start at $50 per minute, but I also know people on Lemmasoft tend to undersell themselves by quite a bit compared to industry standard pay.

Re: Please critique my backgrounds!

What's the resolution of the game, and where will the textbox be located? The bedroom background may be a bit too low and get covered up. You can zoom in and scoot it up to fill the empty space at the top for a quick fix. I'm not exactly qualified to talk in depth about color, so I'll leave these ar...

Re: How do you pay for Kickstarter assets?

Short answer: You need to come up with the money. Extended answer: If you went through with your Kickstarter plan, how are you going to pay people for their work if it fails? If you don't have the budget for an artist, do it yourself. If you can't, learn. If it's taking too long to learn, then get t...

Re: What do you think about VR visual novels?

I believe what felix is trying to say is that people are trying to shoehorn VR into games that never had any problems VR could fix. If you want to publish on the Apple App Store, it's about $100 USD a year. Here's another perspective about the Indiepocaplyse: https://www.gdcvault.com/play/1025672/20...

Re: Best way to do sprite poses

Hmm another option could be creative wardrobe manipulation. If you gave the dominant character a long cape, you could draw a dejected pose with him huddling his entire body under his cape. That way you can change his clothes, but the dejected pose wouldn't need to change for as long as he wears a ca...

Re: Best way to do sprite poses

It's hard to say which type of pose changes will be most effective without knowing the personalities/archetypes of your characters. For more reserved or lethargic characters, you can get away with minimal changes to the default pose. Dramatic, energetic characters will need more drastic pose changes...

Re: (first post) i draw whit paper, does that work for a vn?, also what should i have to be a selectable part of a team

The barest of requirements to apply for a team is to have a portfolio. It can be a thread on Lemmasoft (Recruitment & Services Offered > I am an Artist), tumblr, twitter, or (my preference) an artstation site. It doesn't matter how you create a sprite (most of the time), as long as the sprite backgr...

Re: When to start coding / commissioning a GUI?

(Ok I think I kinda understand what you're asking, so I hope I'm not completely off the mark this time.) This is how I usually work if there's preexisting art assets. Before that, two things: 1) I'll be using sprites as an example, but the general principles will be the same for UI and 2) this is my...

Re: When to start coding / commissioning a GUI?

I would say that you should've spent more time figuring out the art direction before you commissioned any art at all. But since you already have lineart, you can use that as a point of reference in your document (unless you decide to commission new ones). Ideally, you would first make a document wit...

Re: What questions would you like to ask other visual novel creators?

If you really want to write a thesis based on the development and production of VNs, I suggest you make one first. Also, read the wikipedia page on the history of adventure games. There's a lot of overlap with adventure games and VNs, and it'll help you to know where they diverged. While I don't kno...

Re: The philosophy of adding Gambling element in a game

It depends on a few factors:
  • Does the number of coins or items bought by coins block the player from advancing the main objective?
  • Will it unlock extra content?
  • Is it a micro-transaction, a free game or a one-time pay game?

Re: Free vs Paid Visual Novels

I would play a free VN over a paid one if it's easily accessible. Meaning if it's a browser-based game that only requires me to click on a button to start, it's more likely I will play it. On the flip side, I would pay for a game from a developer that has a track record of making games I enjoy. If i...
