If jedit doesn't work, use scite instead, it does the exact same job only you need to download it seperately since it isn't bundled with renpy. Just be sure to set it in options. I've no idea why sound doesn't work for you when playing renpy demos since they worked fine for me. Oh, jEdit works fine...
