I have no problem with the instant romance. People do decide to move across continents for each other after knowing each other for two days. (I find it a bit silly/naive as no matter how strong the attraction, you don't really *know* someone after 2 days. But it *is* something that some people do.) ...

Thanks, it definitely will be somewhat boring for the player without an inherent objective. I think it will be good if the contemplative moments were somehow related to the main issue, which might help me connect the two. I think in most good stories, the character building stuff is directly relate...

I think it would be a great time period, TBH. Also, while there may not be a lot of games focusing on that time period, there is a fair amount of media (books and TV shows come to mind). So it's probably of some interest to a number of people.

I believe the Uncle Mugen thread has a number of backgrounds similar to what you're looking for. It may take a bit of searching (mostly because it's a looong thread and a number of backgrounds aren't shown on the first page), but he does amazing work!
