Re: Writing process: focus on story first vs. world-building first?

You can't do any of it on your own. I actually might start with world building. Your world will influence your characters greatly. Your world will influence the types of plots that are even possible. I'm currently reading Gone with the Wind. There would be no plot to the story if there was no Civil ...

Re: What do you do for your Art? (for non-artists)

Lemmasoft has a lot of options under the creative commons license. Some are only for free stuff, true, but there are a few that will allow commercial. This would probably be my first option. After that, 100-200 pounds seems really low, even with revenue sharing. (If I was trying to earn a living wag...

Hi! I (unfortunately) recently lost a background artist for the game I'm working on. He was nearly finished, so I've been able to piece together several backgrounds, but am missing one pixel asset (a house/mansion) that will complete the final background. I was hoping to find someone who can create ...

Re: I'm starting a VN alone: How should I go about this?

I'm going to echo the "don't worry about the writing too much" early on. It's going to suck. That's the state of most rough drafts. :) Also, while you may want to do the VN 90% alone, it might be worth seeing if you can find someone to beta it once it's finished. (Especially if you continue to find ...

Re: tips on plotting story for adult visual novel

Once concern I have (from reading the blurb) is that the backstory seems very heavy while the story-story is...pretty scant. It's great to know who the protagonist is/where he comes from/etc...but that's not your *story*. The story is what's actually happening on screen. (Which, from the summary is....

I keep thinking punny, too. Like, "Roll of the Dice" or "Critical Hits" or something equally terrible. But for something serious, you'd probably want to avoid that. :)

Re: Am I Being Paid Fairly?

As noted above, "pro" magazines pay upwards of $0.06/word. So if you're making more than that, you're not doing *too* badly for yourself. (In fact, it's probably even better as most of these markets don't pay on spec, so you're writing a story, submitting it, and *hoping* you get $0.06/word. Note th...

Re: How to format editing samples?

I would probably redline a document. If I was going to hire an editor, I'd want some sense as to what feedback was provided. (i.e. did they just catch 1-2 errors because otherwise the script was great? Did they make substantiative edits or just proof reading? Are their edits helpful or just strange?...

Re: How to keep artists committed?

Whoa Mutive, I'll have to say something regarding filing claim. While it convenient for the commissioner, it can be REALLY damaging to the artist especially if commissioner doesn't communicate (aka gives warning) about it beforehand. If the case is you give the money to the artist, but then afterwa...

Re: How to keep artists committed?

One other thought I had to add is that it's good to have the ability for recourse. Paypal gives a 180 day period in which to file a claim. So, say, you have a $1,000 commission, half paid up front, the other half due at the end of the period, and the artist isn't finished by the end of the period......

Re: Fictional Real-World Locations

I'm going to echo dreamfarmer above with how novels that just kind of throw out names without a lot of background feel...off. But beyond all the other good advice, if you're going to create a location, really think about the whys. Seattle-ites are super excited about sunny weather (and go outdoors c...

Re: Does anybody know how to write a point-and-click adventure game?

I'm working on one now. I write mostly in either full code or pseudo-code as it's nearly impossible for me to write otherwise. Generally I use an if-else statement then call to additional dialogue something like this: if apple == True and banana == True: jump applebanana elif apple == True: jump app...

Re: Writing visual novels that are geared toward adults

. Sexual themes - kind of. Nowadays I prefer my sexual content presented in a mature way; with realistic undertones. Give me a sober depiction. I'm going to echo this. I'm kind of bored of perfect sex with perfect bodies and perfect everything. I'm okay without sex being in a story (or in it explic...

Re: What's Best for Voice Actors

A question - is there a reason you have such a short time window (even after getting the word count)? From my perspective, that seems like a potentially easy solution. (Delay the game by two weeks and give a month audition window.)
