Re: Game Direction

I could see an RPG working, or something where you're point building (similar to Long Live the Queen) or even a conventional VN. But I'd also agree that (to me) writing it first makes sense. Maybe one format works really well (or doesn't work) once you have a base game. Maybe the whole concept falls...

Re: Game Direction

I'm pretty much just going to echo parttimestorier. :) First, everything can work and be awesome. Somewhere out there a woman decided that a pigeon dating sim was a good idea and it actually made for a pretty cool game. Go figure. :) One warning I'll give about prologues is that, if they're not all ...

Re: Should you cite your sources when putting factual info in your VN?

I second the idea of citing sources in your credits. It keeps the citations from disrupting the game play while also showing that you've done your research (and giving credit where due).

Re: How to not self-insert

What I've found is that stories can survive without very good characters (think "The DaVinci Code"), but can rarely survive without a plot. While having a good characters clearly enhances a novel, an awful lot of the time characters exist less because they're fun and more because they push the plot ...

Re: How to not self-insert

I use my imagination. Heavily. :) Sometimes characters are based off of someone I know or a fictional person. Most often, they're created to serve the plot. (e.g. "I need someone to get the main character to do A, B and C and someone with these views will add the most interesting perspective") IMO, ...

Re: Questions about artist quotes and pay structure

I would NOT advice to go with a salary if you are a little indie production. I do not think it would cost more, but on a legal point of view, it can cause a lot of worries. I wanted to echo this. I am very much not a lawyer, but once things become salaried, there are often legal implications that c...

Re: Good Examples of Sprites Talking to Each Other?

Your wish is my command! When I only had two or three sprites on screen at a time, I used this: show cl at left behind vi show vi at center: ease .5 zoom 1.05 # Using the "ease + zoom" command means that the character goes from her earlier default position at a size to 5% larger than before over .5 ...

Re: How can I improve my dialog?

There's no single best way. I'd argue that consistency is probably more important than style. :)

For thoughts, you can always put them in italics. Or you can have things coming from say, "Narrator" vs. "MC thoughts" vs. "MC". But I generally don't care that much, as long as I know which one it is.

Re: How to work with people in different timezones and getting people to work?

Sorry for the late reply, but thanks for your advice my guy. I'll consider using this with one of the people I'm working with since they don't seem to be very active on our usual chatting app. Granted, that may be because of life stuff just like in your situation, so thanks for giving me a new way ...

This looks hilarious. :) I'm currently busy with a number of other projects, but would be happy to beta test once it is ready. Feel free to ping me then. :)

Re: Fresh dev, artist first

[*] Don't try to do everything at once. When you think of ideas as you go, add them to your to-do list, don't get distracted. Just focus on adding text. Or adding scene transitions. Or adding effects. But just one of those things. Then stop, take a deep breath, and then start something else.[/list]...

Re: How to work with people in different timezones and getting people to work?

Another thought as far as the time zones thing goes... Most things can be handled by email. I've worked with reasonably large teams 100% by email. You do lose some nuance, but the great thing about email is, people don't need to be working at the same time. You can email, "Hey, Mutive, do you have t...

Anyway, I got it to work by doing something like this... if hairStyle == 1 and hairColor == 1: "Customization/Girl/Hair/1/1.png" elif hairStyle == 1 and hairColor == 2: "Customization/Girl/Hair/1/2.png" elif hairStyle == 1 and hairColor == 3: "Customization/Girl/Hair/1/3.png" elif hairStyle == 1 and...
