Re: Conflict (creating them, and presenting them in a great way)
My advice would be to come up with a story you want to tell first, and then examine those ideas to discover what themes drive that story. My novel deals a lot with loss and acceptance, but it primarily started as a cool time travel story I wanted to tell. This is by no means the only way to go about...

Re: Writing visual novels that are geared toward adults
I'm just some schmuck without much life experience myself, so take this with a grain of salt, but... I'd recommend just finding things that resonate with your own life. Something you can use to make it real. You may think nobody will be interested in your unique perspective, but NOBODY wants to read...

Re: Starting with the pinnacle, then gluing highlights
2. Establish beginning, middle, and ending. Even if you're not one for outlines (pantsers as many fiction writers like to say), you absolutely need to know what characters and their situation will be like in the beginning, middle, and ending of your story. I like to outline about 3/4ths of a story ...

Re: How to make a socially awkward character...interesting??
I'd advise getting into the head of this character, and even if it doesn't come up in the writing, know what's going through their head in a given situation. Quiet people aren't totally passive, they just keep their thoughts to themselves most of the time. If you know what those thoughts are, you'll...

Re: Post your music
I've got a few tracks brewing. Unfortunately, my perfectionism combined with my relative inexperience in music production means that I'm pretty slow at creating stuff I'm proud of, but whatever. https://soundcloud.com/jonathan-larson-1/sets/vn-prototypes I like both themes. The only difficulty to m...

Re: Fictional Real-World Locations
I appreciate all the feedback. Good stuff here. I'll be considering all of it as I move forward with my story. I just now connected that the story draft posted a few days ago is you-- I haven't gotten too deeply into it I whole-heartedly apologize for how long it is. I'm fully aware that read...

Fictional Real-World Locations
I'm writing what is shaping up to be a fairly lengthy epic of a story that I hope to be able to make into a VN. I have a lot of the story elements, such as the characters, main plotline, and setting. I want to talk a little bit about the last one there, and hopefully get a few questions answered reg...

Re: Writing Courtroom Trials
Also, I think it's better for a mystery to have a solution that's "too obvious" than "impossible to solve." Most people aren't very good at mysteries, and as a mystery writer you start to pick up on a lot of things most people wouldn't notice. So even if it's really obvious to y...

Some initial, broad feedback requested on early script draft
So I've been a bit conflicted about this. On the one hand, I'm eager to get feedback on my work like any artist. On the other hand, I fear putting it in the critical eye so soon, as I'm aware that it will be far from perfect. Also because I'm afraid of criticism. So, to that end, I'll put a little d...

Re: Making Stories and Characters Vibrant and Fun?
The biggest thing with making characters come alive is banter between them. What do they do when things aren't serious? If they're always in serious mode, it can come across as bland, with characters only existing to further the plot and story. For as much fault as I found with Fate/Stay Night when ...

Re: Making Stories and Characters Vibrant and Fun?
Maybe think more about writing jokes or comedy. Start reading comedy articles, writings, whatever. I'm writing a VN that's very realistic and deals with a lot of heavy themes like loss and death, but my writing style tends to be fairly humorous at times, since I have a background in comedic writing....

Re: Text Speed Discussion
Yeah, this is kind of a matter of taste. I prefer my text to scroll, just to give it a bit of motion and activity, but I prefer it to scroll slightly faster than I read. I will still take a scrolling speed that's too slow over instant text, since if it's too slow, I can just manually display the who...

Re: Question regarding offering preferred pronouns option for main player character
At risk of sounding blunt, I think including a non-standard pronoun would shatter the suspension of disbelief, and anyone upset by the usage of the standard he/she/they in a 1968 setting can deal with it. I can understand placing importance on inclusion and such in your day-to-day life, but bending ...

Re: Too many sad backstories???
It can also be a good idea to have characters with already-resolved issues. Their hardships had an effect on who they are, but they don't have any active trauma or anything, it's all in the past. For example, I have a character who suffered from a lot of social isolation due to shyness, etc, but has...
