Re: How much narration is too much narration?

Also, lines of narration don't have to do just one thing. Narration that's just pure exposition gets dry fast: "I'm a second-year student at Tree Academy. I'm riding the bus to school, waiting for the first day of second semester to start. And now, we're arriving." I personally prefer narr...

Re: That Long Cold Night [Sci-Fi/Horror/Mystery] [Scenario-Complete]

Thanks Nay, appreciate the comments & feedback! I definitely rely a bit too much on dialogue tags, for sure. Partly that's not knowing yet how expressive I'll be able to be with sprites and CGs, and part of it's just a crutch that shows I'm still getting comfortable with the medium. I'm definite...

Re: Fresh dev, artist first

Welcome! A few very general pointers: Save lots! Save different versions. You'll make mistakes and sometimes rolling back takes far less time than fixing things. When something isn't working, find the last thing that worked and change one thing at a time, carefully and slowly until it breaks again. ...

[CLOSED][PAID] Looking for (a) editorial assessment and (b) beta readers for a sci-fi mystery

[UPDATE -- All positions filled, thanks so much to those interested!] Hello; I’m looking for beta readers for a draft-complete visual novel script. Professional experience isn't required, just some passion for the genre. I'm willing to offer some $$ compensation if you get through the full script a...

Re: netcromancer ch 1 [Mystery] [Sci-fi]

Man, this oozes style. Definitely catches my interest. For me personally I love stories that were originally written in an episodic format, but I'm hesitant to start reading myself until the story is complete (or at least seeing that new chapters are coming out on schedule) if only because the fear ...

Good Examples of Sprites Talking to Each Other?

Can anyone think of VNs (or scenes within VNs) that do a good job of depicting scenes in which every character seems to be visible (i.e. it's not first person from the perspective of the protagonist, or the protagonist is watching a conversation that they're not a part of?). I'd like to go back and ...

Re: Is ok to isolate traits to specific characters?

I think it's totally okay for characters to have a "first impression" that anchors on a specific personality characteristic. Like nangke and lummoire suggested, one of your first challenges is to introduce the character and let the reader do their initial assessment of who this person is, ...

Re: [LONG] Layered Narration Exposed

That was a bit of a long post, so let me react to what I think was one of the most interesting points. I do agree that one of the most appealing aspects of visual novel storytelling is the ability to show the same sequence of events with subtle variations based on different choices. I think it speak...

Re: Trying to figure out how to progress this situation

The most interesting dramatic moment you're creating here is the moment in which X is told -- or realizes -- what the robot master's intentions are. Making that moment powerful, and choosing how it happens and how X reacts to it, is the real anchor decision point for the whole rest of the scene. Fig...

Re: Writing with Emojis

Yeah, it's a nice technique! I've noticed that for as much discussion there is of the art and writing of visual novels, there doesn't seem to be a lot of attention paid to the creative effort that goes into the actual blocking of scenes, which is more than just a pure programming exercise. It's nice...

That Long Cold Night [Sci-Fi/Horror/Mystery] [Scenario-Complete]

Our world was transformed with the discovery of chroma, an elementary particle isolated from solar radiation that in large concentrations had unusual gravitational properties. This discovery led to rapid advances in data storage, communication, and consumer technology--but it also radically transfor...

Re: Guestbook

Hello everyone! My name is Luke, currently living in NYC. I've been a lurker here for a few years now but it's probably time to say hello. Unfortunately with the world being what it is right now I've lost access to a lot of the in-person circles I'd rely on for writing advice, so that brings me back...
