Re: Can you display a Visual Novel on a website?
Yup, you'll learn a lot as you work on things and ask questions and experiment, and it will get a lot easier! I've been gradually getting fairly decent at RenPy, and it's crazy to think about how impossible learning to program seemed to me a couple years ago, when now I've been able to accomplish s...

Re: Can you display a Visual Novel on a website?
To answer the question about a password system, that's totally doable! I recently learned how to do something like that from this thread . The example there is letting the player name the main character, but you could do basically the same thing for letting them enter a password - then just have it...

Re: Can you display a Visual Novel on a website?
I thought you didn't want a player to have to download the game though. That method will still require it. Hmm... it is 'downloading' as the bar suggests, but is it actually something that the reader is taking with them as a download? I might be a little too blind to how this is working in the back...

Re: Critique my writing- opening scene
So, when in character as Ange I want her to have a very prim and proper voice- she's had the "princess" mindset beaten out of her by the military but her high-class upbringing and private education make her speech patterns, mannerisms, and interests unique compared to other characters. An...

Re: Critique my writing- opening scene
You're new to creative writing, correct? I think it's seen in the voice of your writing most. It's not that you lack an ability to describe a scene, so much as, you don't have a voice that engages and entertains. You're far away. I read through your script so far, and what struck me most was 1) wher...

This is exactly what I was thinking of! Thank you.PyTom wrote: ↑Mon Apr 01, 2019 11:20 pm Sort of. You can see the current implementation at https://renpy.beuc.net/, but it's being worked on.

Re: Opinions on making a (seemingly) "cliche" protagonist?
This sounds like a super fun idea. The question is, who are you looking to 'surprise' with this information? Are you looking to reveal the protagonist's true nature to the reader as the ultimate holy crap moment, or are you looking to show how the protagonist's behavior toward his peers as being the...

Re: Writing VN's with story structure different than "hero journey"
I would discard trying to 'avoid' the hero's journey, and instead focus on what you actually want. There is a reason the hero's journey is referenced so much in story telling, and it's mostly because of the archetypes that are being reflected again and again that we as humans respond to because of o...

Can you display a Visual Novel on a website?
Hey, I'm totally new to this stuff, so I apologize if this is the dumbest question ever. >_> I'm looking at using Ren'Py to create my visual novel, but I know this is going to be a long journey, one I would prefer could be enjoyed with others. I have a website, and I'm trying to figure out if I can ...

Hi Matalla, so glad for the response! (For some reason I was expecting email notifications and was totally shocked to see I had replies when returning to the forum. But hey, happy surprise!) You can configure that in your user control panel (Click on your username in the top right corner -> Board p...

Re: I need about a hundred wishes that might be asked from a Genie.
Hmm... so you're dealing with a lot of poverty and huge class divides in the Aladdin story, especially when you're looking at the background characters. Also, a big gender divide because of the gender roles the society enforced. That might help narrow down some wishes. But, even still, they could be...

Re: Hey there ^^
Right now I'm curious about character perspective (my concept is third person instead of the many first person POVs I've stumbled across) and how that perspective is portrayed to the reader through the graphics. For example, when you have 2 characters talking to each other, would you have both char...

Re: Hey there ^^
Ooh, some cool thoughts (also, welcome to the forum!) I don't know of an in depth study of it, but I think you'll find most visual novels are blocked more like a stage play than a movie. All the players in the scene are visible on the stage at the same time, and they enter and exit the stage as the...

Re: Hey there ^^
Welcome to the forum and visual novels! I'm a writer, artist, and screenwriter myself, and I've finished my first visual novel last year. Recently started working on a second one. The best advice I can give you is to just do your own thing. I played about 1.4 visual novels before I started making m...

Re: Hey there ^^
Heiden is an iconic queen with coding. <3 But you need to read more and get more experience. There are a lot of unique visual novels out there in the completed games forum that do not fit the standard mould. They have absolutely inspired me. Ooh, hi Godline! I'm going to have to check the completed...
