Re: Nervous about making first game....

You should give making a visual novel a try. But keep in mind, that the most important thing is, that you should have fun creating it. Don't worry about being a beginner, I am also one. To tell the truth everybody, started out as a beginner.

I use an old wacom bamboo fun small. I like it especially because it works with windows and linux and I don't have to care about cells for the pen.

Re: Questions about screen effects

Hmm, not really sure about it, but perhaps the "Animation and Transformation Language" in renpy (http://renpy.org/doc/html/atl.html) might help, but I never tried that for I am also a beginner. As far as I remember there were things like hpunch/vpunch. Perhaps taking a look into the script...

Re: Thoughts on visual novels moving to widescreen

Actually I do not really care, if the ratio is 16:9,16:10 or 4:3 when reading a vn, but when I try to position a spirit i think it's harder in 16:9 for the screen feels rather empty if only one spirit is required. In my opinion the text also gets protracted which makes it harder to read. But on the ...

Re: how dedicated are you in creating your game's settings??

Hmm, I think the dependences between story, character and setting are multi-directional. Depending on where your initial point is, (be it the character, a story idea or an interesting setting) many things fall in place automatically. So I think that, when creation the environment you have to be very...

Re: Making a matching minigame

Hm, don't ask me for details, but I think it should be possible. Perhaps you would need some python programing and use the ui.imagebutton.
But I never tried that, so I am not to sure about it.

Re: Background Feedback

I agree with broken_angel and fortaat. The colouring is really nice. I also like the composition of the room, for it's not to cramed nor empty. It also appears tidy. For the perspective I think there are about three focal points (in my opinion there should be just one for this scene). Also the floor...

Re: Most precious game in your collection?

Hm, my favorite games at the moment would be the Project Zero (Fatal Frame) Series for the PS2. When I think that I stumbled across the first one on an flea market not knowing what I got there, and the hard time I had to get the two other ones.... Second hand shopping for old games can be quite call...

Re: Do you prefer NVL or ADV visual novels?

Hmm, in my opinion it depends on the story an the writing style.
Perhaps you could try a view scenes in both modes and decide based on these which one is better for your project.
Like said before a mixture should also be taken into consideration.

Re: Episodic games.

I am not to sure about episodic games. As said before, I would always fear that the second part would never be released and so the whole story never revealed. As for the second game, I would prefer to play the first one first, so a warning about the second would be appreciated. As for unlockable con...

Re: Balance between comedy and seriousness?

I think it depends which effect you want to achieve. Some stories use the change between a funny and a serious part to let the reader even more fall into the emotional desaster. But even here overdoing effects like these can destroy a good story. So I also think that it would be good to decide what ...

Re: Downloadable Games are Important

Visual novels are art and culture. And it's one that I think will be around for a long time - the rest of my life, hopefully. I'd like to be able to, when I'm an old man, pick up the same games I play today, and play them again. While I don't expect to have any children of my own, I'd like to be ab...

Re: Newbie question: Art or writing? Which is more important

Perhaps from a novelists point of view, the art is like the art at the book-cover or the summary at the backside of the book. A well designed bookcover will attract readers in a bookstore to look at the book. So I think both things and not to forget the music are important. In my oppinion (which mig...
