Re: Surgery

I was talking with Tom a few minutes ago, and the surgery went well and he's feeling good. Currently, he's fending off the boredom of the hospital by reading Lucky Star.

Actually, writing a Blade -> Ren'Py converter might well discourage people from using Ren'Py. Since if you use Blade and don't like it, you can always change. I think that the tool that would likely encourage people to use Ren'Py is a Ren'Py->Blade converter. This way, you can try Ren'Py and if you ...

Nice Job!

Nice job, mikey!
I like the good ending, it's a nice twist on what seemed like a mystical story.

I didn't get the distinction that you were trying to make in the choices, though. Being nice to someone is unscientific. It doesn't make sense how you could both be more scientific AND be nicer to her.

Ok, granted, you might have to pretend that you are in England of 100 years ago...

But Shirley, Tracey, and Stacey were definitely all men's names at some point.

But good point about Robin and Jamie, thanks!

Another major big use of variables for VNs is to keep track of choices in a non-looping story. e.g. menu: "Buy her a swimsuit": "I buy her a swimsuit!" $ gift = "swimsuit" "Buy her a tennis racket": "I buy her a tennis tracket" $gift = "racket&q...

BCS, No offense intended. You weren't very specific about which part you wanted explained, and when people aren't explicit I tend to start from the beginning. I think that monele gave a good explanation of variables, so I won't rehash that. I just want to point out that I edited my example to try to...

BCS,

Ok, first question: do you understand the way that indentation is used in renpy (and python) to indicate which parts go with what?

BCS, Do you mean something like: $ choice1var = 0 $ choice3var = 0 menuStartLabel: menu: "Choice 1": if choice1var == 0: "I am chosing choice 1, an option I have never chosen before" elif choice1var == 1: "I have previously entered choice 1, but only once" elif choice1v...

New Recipes in the Cookbook

Hi! As a general announcement, there are a few new recipes in the cookbook. The latest is: http://www.renpy.org/wiki/renpy/doc/cookbook/Good_Looking_Italics Going forward, I'm going to be trying to collect really helpful answer to questions in this forum and adding them as recipes to the cookbook (a...

"I don't see any other way ^^;" Version control software, such as subversion. Check everything that you're working on it. Every time you do something major, commit the new version. It's less work than renaming. :) Granted, being a programmer I just have subversion lying around anyway, so i...

The best thing to do is to find some old Sierra games. King's Quest, Quest for Glory, Leisure Suit Larry, Police Quest.. one of those. Or, preferably, several of those. Play them for a bit. There's nothing like a Sierra game to teach you to say every 30 seconds. It's been a long time since I last pl...

PyTom would be able to tell you more about this, but if you don't find anything suitable and don't mind a bit of work, you might be able to statically render the non-free font that you want into a bitmapped sfont and use that. Copyright law doesn't allow one to copyright bitmapped fonts (true type f...

recipe up

It's really not that bad once you get used to the wiki code, but I can understand how it can be intimidating. Keep in mind, though, a wiki is versioned, so no matter what you do you can't screw it up permanently. In the worst case you'll just have to back out your changes. Anyhow, I put the recipe u...

the features page is live

PyTom pushed the features page live earlier today. So there's now a convenient way for people to check out Ren'Py to see if it's worth downloading the demo and doing further investigation. It's always good to give me as comfortable a path to addiction as possible. At least, if you're the dealer... A...
