Re: ValueError: too many values to unpack

That's entirely sufficient; it means that there's some typo that the traceback isn't giving me a line number on. Will get hunting.

ValueError: too many values to unpack

I've been actually going back to working on my Tale of Genji project, inspired perhaps by nawrinomo. I add some extra data to a python file I've been importing, and now I get this error message from the renpy file that tries to import that bit of python code. I could do a bunch of trial and error, b...

Re: Artificial Intelligence Personality

It seems to me that there is a lot of potential in just building on the model of point-based games, at least so far as giving the player the feeling of dealing with an intelligence (and maybe not actually being completely frivolous as far as getting closer to AI). Just make the way the points change...

Re: Creator of ALICE is dying.

Monele, yes, a Turing machine can program itself. And on the limits of the UTM, Church's Thesis says that there is no intelligible sense of "computable" on which it can mean more than "computable by a UTM," and nobody has ever found any plausible grounds for rejecting the thesis....

Re: Princess maker 2

Thanks for directing us to the PM1 translation! Cool stuff. Why aren't there lots more games like this? Or at least lots more like this that have been translated; I guess I've heard there are a few more like PM in Japanese.

I claim the silver medal at 36. Though my taste in games is extremely immature.

Re: Have you ever tried Inform 7?

I'm not really a fan of the IF format; the mini-game of figuring out exactly which weird option the programmer had in mind for you to do and figuring out exactly how to phrase it irritates the heck out of me. But I do like a lot of interactivity and game-like elements. It seems to me that it's easie...

Re: How to do politically correct writting (a simple trick)

I find this complaint amusing, considering the genre. Look at how any Anime treats anything Western; Anime with Western settings or central Western plot elements pretty much always misrepresents them absurdly. Their view of America is far more wildly inaccurate than what you'd get from Hollywood mov...

Re: Multiple main characters in a VN.

Ever17, already mentioned, is what I first thought of when I saw this topic. I liked that game despite what I saw as the quite insufficiently frequent and explicit sex (I know that wasn't the point of the game, which is my entire criticism of the game), so I'd say something like this approach can w...

Well, one traditional method is to have events involving the girl happen in relevant locations. The girl who's always out clubbing at night is presumably interested in social life, and possibly appearance (since people dress up to go out). Or if the player gets a chance to compete in things involvin...

Wow

Very impressive game. I found the battles to get rather tedious, but I often feel that way about the combats in lots of professionally made games, so I don't know how much of a criticism you should take that as.

I was going to comment that reading word by word is not normal in skilled readers. But on the central topic here, I tend to like longer games better, but I also think it's important in a game for the player's choices to matter, and I don't like long stretches of text without choices. A long game wit...

Eh.

I thought it was silly that it started out with the premise that you're going to get all the girls, and still did the standard H-game thing of punishing you for not decisively favoring one (well, until you unlock the harem ending). I think there are definitely better H-games (though certainly there ...
