Re: Word Minimum

The Letter and Planetarian MIGHT curbstomp Fate/Stay Night (dunno if I'd agree, but for argument's sake). However, "A Tale of Two Cities" curbstomps the very best short story. Switching over to film: no 5-minute short will EVER be as good as "Citizen Kane" or "Casablanca&quo...

Re: Sound Effects

Every town has a glut of aspiring musicians. Find some friendly ones, borrow their microphones (and the musicians if they're into sound engineering / want producer credits / are stoned / are bored / are all of the previous) and foley the things you want yourself. It's not as hard as you think it is...

Re: Word Minimum

The potential quality of a shorter work depends on if you want just a theme or if you want a theme + plot + characters. Harlon Ellison's "I Have No Mouth, and I Must Scream" is a fantastic short story, but its characters are mostly forgettable and its plot exists only for its themes. Let's...

Re: Dating Mechanic

Anyway, what would make for an interesting romance game mechanic? Good question. Some gameplay concepts to think about... [smartass] How about the idea that gave "Demons' Souls" the 2009 "New Game Mechanic of the Year" award? Make romancing the targets super difficult (i.e. as t...

Re: What do you think of a game been both BxG or BxB ??

As a male firm in my (hetero)sexuality, I don't mind BxB at all, but I can't identify with a character who gets hit on by every guy he knows. Situations where a long-term friend comes out to you (and you accept!?), maybe I can see, but having multiple gay people hitting on me when I'm not playing an...

Re: Types of Choices You Like

This argument is entirely irrelevant to me, because I see no difficulty or challenge in novel games. I want to read the game, which means I will try to get every ending (preferably every subpath period) sooner or later. Which ending I get by making my first choices is neither here nor there; I just ...

Re: A question about introduction and perspective

Obviously, you need a hook. Something to grab a reader's attention. As the exposition is usually low-action, this often results in bringing up or foreshadowing a subplot which won't be expanded on until later. Clannadman touched on this. Ironically, an excellent example comes from his namesake: &quo...

Re: Post your photo

For the record, as a white US American, I can say that I understand the idea of US Americans seeing Filipinos as similar in many respects to people of Hispanic ethnicity. It's not about the looks, it's about the stereotypical immigrant from the Philippines. The stereotypes for Chinese/Korean/Vietnam...

I feel like a sticky in recruitment where each person posts exactly once would be an easier and perhaps equally useful tool. Just sayin'.

Re: Making scenes longer...?

Actually I'm saying the projected word count based on macroscopic pacing is what I'm pleased with. I'm not pleased with how some scenes seem choppy and short, then slapped together. Then again, I just went over my first script file (~10k words) and the pacing is a-okay there... I should compare this...

Making scenes longer...?

I've been trying my hand at writing VN scripts recently, and I'm having trouble with pacing. My method for dialogue scenes is to put out something related to the work's theme, something to further the work's plot, and then wrap those two together into a conversation in-character in order to get in s...

Re: Inspired by....?

-Agree with LWR about holy texts having awesome plotlines, whether you see them as mythology or what you believe to be true. Or something in-between. -My current project came from a mix of two thoughts. First, an attempt to think up something terribly disturbing, because I doubted my ability to do s...

Re: Text Adventuring

To preface: I know you were joking LWR, but I always get riled up at ageism like that, so I'm going to bitch at no one in particular. I too played games off of floppy floppies and DOS, but I don't think that makes modern kids spoiled... as long as they're learning to use a computer, they're getting ...

Re: your fetish?

+1 for stupid people. In real life, I'd never go for a stupid girl and have trouble keeping stupid male friends... I get a little too "tsukkomi-ish" if you'll pardon my usage of a weeaboo word... but in fiction it's just sublime. It's so cute. Of course, my real life girlfriend is smart (i...
