You pretty much have to make the character look more exotic than the other generically-moe kids. Different eyes, more prominent/shiny lips, more hourglass body, what have you. As long as they look different in a way that is still appealing.

His, err, lower-beard seems to be the irrevocable focal point of his character design even in the face of crazy hair, an eyebrow piercing, headphones, and tattoos. If you flip your sprites, make sure that any asymmetrical details are redone so that they don't flip (eyepatches, bangs etc.) I think it's better to just modify the relevant sprites for that purpose.
