Re: What music to listen to while drawing?

I just watched this video and remembered this thread: Video: You probably shouldn't listen to music when drawing The main point is main in the video (namely, that people tend to be less productive with auditory stimulation of any kind), though I think there's a point to be made that sometimes, you c...

Re: The Buzz - a visual novel podcast

So, a bit of an update: The Buzz has now released a total of 30 episodes. ( You can view all episodes on Soundcloud, here .) And episode 30 is a bit of a "sunset" episode, which is to say, it's the last episode we're doing before going on indefinite hiatus. This podcast is over two years old and I f...

Re: Eliminating all forms of "to be": Active Voice

If I want to convey a scene or image to the reader, then I try to avoid forms of "to be" (passive voice). But not every line of the story is trying to convey a scene. Sometimes, you just want to convey raw information. Saying "Kim had been a middle school teacher for 10 years" is not an active sente...

Re: How do you avoid "convenient" or "coincidental" plotting

Usually, things in a story that feel arbitrary and implausible can be fixed with proper foreshadowing, though this mostly applies to things that happen mid-story that make a reader go, "Huh?" So it applies less to your example: Jane disappeared seven years ago leaving behind her younger sister, Mary...

Re: Being evident or as silent as a ninja

"Show, don't tell" is a good guiding principle. However, showing usually requires more space than telling. He was impatient. He glanced around the room as he waited, his eyes darting from the clock to the door as he restlessly tapped his foot. The first example is telling, the second example is show...

Re: How visual novel writing is different

The 'wrong' example you gave doesn't seem wrong to me, even though speaker one didn't expect an answer there's no confusion from speaker 2 answering to confirm it. So, I might be responding to your word choice here rather than the actual sentiment behind it, but the example I provided wasn't intend...

How visual novel writing is different

I just wrote a blog post about how visual novel writing differs from other forms of fiction writing: http://www.route59games.com/how-visual-novel-writing-is-different/ I wrote this post mainly to address questions that I often see from writers outside of VN development who want to understand the wri...

All of the talks have now been posted to Youtube! Re: Games with 100+ characters

The only games I can think of that have close to that many characters are the Fire Emblem games. I believe that Fire Emblem 10 (Radiant Dawn) is the biggest of them, as it's a sequel that basically expanded the cast of the game preceding it; Fire Emblem 10 sports 72 playable characters, 42 of which ...

Re: What tool to use for fulfillment/sending review copies?

I've never had to deal with this issue myself, but this thread got me curious, so I decided to do a bit of searching around, and I stumbled upon Humble's self-service tools , specifically the ones that deal with DIY Order Fulfillment . This page's instructions seems to be fairly straightforward; fro...

Re: Secrets behind the one-dimensional MC?

This may not be answering the question you asked, but I think there's virtue to having an MC who isn't completely "faceless" and presenting them with a bit of a personality. For example, out of all of the Key VN/KyoAni anime harem protagonists, Yuuichi from Kanon seems to be a favorite among fans be...

Re: Keep it real, or make it out-of-this-world weird?

Mammon's post about camp gets at a larger point which I think is pretty important, which is that tone is part of being internally consistent. Part of what makes hard magic or hard science fiction is an internal consistency in the way that the fiction's universe behaves: the story establishes that th...
