Do you have an example of the code you're using to move around locations?
The way I'm "moving around", and with visual cues to let the player move as they wish, is by abusing the image map function. I knew Ren'Py was the engine for me when I found out you could do image maps (and so easy, too!). xD

That looks cool! I think you can achieve it through the avatar side placement option included with Ren'py.
I don't know if you can get the avatar to spill out of the box on the bottom or sides, I think just the top ... but that might work well enough for you.
