Re: A Kinetic VN

I'd say it's far less than $3000, at least if you learn how to program in Ren'py, which is quite easy if you dont' get into the detailed stuff like making a custom user interface. If you're a writer you should be able to use Ren'py without someone programming it for you.

Re: How crowded is the visual novel market now?

Haha. After my post (#12) it seems like there was a sudden flood of VN releases on Steam in these last few days. Still, I wouldn't be too concerned about the market being flooded with VN's. There is a vast void of space for things that aren't slice of life romances. (If your game is a slice of life...

Re: Awards?

I don't see much value in award polls, it ultimately just becomes a popularity contest instead of a judge of quality. For example, I have no doubt Doki Doki Literature Club would win SOMETHING because everyone played it. Similar to how a Zelda or Mario title almost always wins Gamefaqs' "Best Game E...

Re: How to remove the weird rainbow-like pattern?

That appears to be compression from your video format. You will basically need to increase the quality of whatever video you're outputting to avoid that.

Re: Creators who have crowdfunded before...

I'd say: use crowdfunding to gauge your game's chance of success. If you fail miserably, then your game probably won't do much better on release - whether due to lack of advertising or just lack of interest. There are so many crowdfunding projects that say "if we fail, we'll go ahead anyway!" The po...

Re: How do you support music that you like?

I would be most likely to buy the soundtrack on Bandcamp. Of course, I tend to only buy music that I'd want to listen to on my iPod, which is usually the upbeat kind, so I am a bit biased in that regard.

Re: Potential tech which could generate 2d illustration from 3d assets

It will probably be a hard sell for most developers. The biggest stumbling block is not the technology itself, but the fact that pre-made assets are generic and lack originality. When you consider that, it actually would cost far more to custom make a 3D model to pose then to commission the art. Als...

Re: Do you like military?

I know there's a subset of people who like military fiction, but I don't really like it unless it has some element of sci-fi/fantasy. I do like playing video games with a modern combat setting, but just reading about it isn't really my cup of tea - maybe because I don't really like war in real life ...

Re: Is controversial alright?

Terrorism is a pretty common plot device in stories. I don't think I'd bat an eye seeing it in a fictional work. Rape on the other hand is a potential land mine. It's usually used as a way for authors to make their works "dark" and "edgy" when they don't know how to do it via regular character devel...

Re: Comparison with Visual Novel Maker

I really highly doubt that Visual Novel Maker will have similar functionality to Renpy, which has been constantly developed and updated for a decade. While it has the benefit of showing you all the features upfront so you don't have to consult the documentation, that kind of thing can be learned in ...

Re: Is my character art passable for a vn?

It really depends on what you're trying to achieve with your VN. Trying to appeal to fans of JVN games by going all out with the art? Then yeah, flat shading might come off as "cheap". Trying to make your own VN as a hobby? Then the art is more than sufficient. It's certainly more than passable if w...

Re: How do you find motivation

The answer to this is, it depends on how personally dedicated you are as an artist. It's the difference between "eh, I might try it out for fun" and "I *want* to make this game and I won't stop trying until I do". Outlining a game is still in the first phase. Some people never get past the first pha...

Re: Seems like people don't really need Ren'Py programmers

One of the whole reason I got into Renpy is because I was bad at programming and it was an easy way to make games without needing much programming experience. So I wouldn't expect a ton of people to require a programmer for their games (if they can't use Renpy they tend to gravitate towards even eas...

Re: What should I do if the Artist I hired takes way too long?

If you are paying for an artist, it's well within your rights to set deadlines, and ask the artist to give you a guarantee that it will take X days. It seems like in this case you should be asking for your money back in its entirety and looking for a new artist. Ultimately if they have health issues...

Re: This style for a visual novel?

Well, it's a unique style that isn't seen too much in visual novels. The artist hasn't worked on/for a visual novel before either. I was just debating go with this style/artist or trying something closer to an anime style. A lot of people seem to have this question. I feel like there's two options,...
