Re: Conversational 'styles' as a game mechanic

Ah, that wasn't clear at all, sorry. I mean, when you "level up" you'll get points to spend on upgrading your skills/traits/styles/etc., and rather than one point to unlock "charming," (for example), it would cost two points to unlock "very diplomatic" (and you'd need to have "diplomatic" already.) ...

Re: Conversational 'styles' as a game mechanic

No worries, and thanks for giving me some things to think about, even if I mostly disagree. ;) And I promise, spamming 'charming' will not be the best way to win friends & influence people. So, one thing I've been thinking about is how much of a range these styles will have, and what effects that wi...

Re: Conversational 'styles' as a game mechanic

I try to let that topic speak for itself but yes, it is implying that it is a pair that deserves criticism. (Bad is up to the impressions made on the final product IMO.) Hm, okay. What I got out of that topic was that there were issues with A) consistency between modules in how (or even whether) th...

Re: Conversational 'styles' as a game mechanic

Thanks for the links and extensive feedback! My response: diplomatic: Just because it's been done badly, isn't a reason not to include it. 'Suggestive' has other connotations, and 'sycophantic' has negative ones. blunt: This might end up being under-used, but I'd still like to provide it for rolepla...

Re: Conversational 'styles' as a game mechanic

Yeah, sardonic is going to be a fun one. Not as likely to win friends & influence people, though! ;) With regards to overlap, I sort of have an idea as where each pair would be used. So, blunt (and diplomatic) are likely to come up when you're saying something negative, while sincere (and charming) ...

Re: How to start making a VN?

I would start here. Anyone can draw stick figures with a mouse! And you'll get started on learning Ren'Py, which is likely to come in handy. :)

Re: The Royal Trap [Fantasy/Intrigue][Female Protagonist]

I'd love to beta-read! I'm technically a published writer (well, it was technical writing ;)), and I have a good eye for proofreading (if I do say so myself). Let me know if I can help out!

Re: Exclusive love interests/paths

Another thing that's been on my mind is how much of a role can/should the love interests play in paths that aren't their own. For example, can the childhood friend stay close to the MC even when the player isn't on his/her route? Would it be weird if he supported the romance in that path? Why not g...

Re: Conversational 'styles' as a game mechanic

Ah, I actually recently found a site with a bunch of CYOA-style games: http://chooseyourstory.com . I've been using it to prototype some ideas, but for the full game I'm planning to build my own engine & web-based editing environment. ChoiceScript could conceivably work... but I'd end up building so...

Re: What kind of rewards appeal to you?

Don't rule out pure story as a reward mechanism. I certainly didn't just play Spirited Heart through again for the gameplay. No CGs, just good writing I wanted to see more of.

Also, I just wanted to say this sounds like a really neat project. :)

Re: Conversational 'styles' as a game mechanic

Well, it's a theoretical game, at this point. It would be web-based, with chunks of second-person text followed by a list of links that act as choices. So... it's kind of like a visual novel minus the visuals, and heavy on the interactivity. Except it's more of an 'open world' than most VNs -- you'l...

Conversational 'styles' as a game mechanic

So, this isn't for a visual novel exactly, but something similar -- definitely a 'story-based game.' I'm planning on having conversations be almost tactical, and as such there are different "styles" you can unlock and use. My tentative list of styles: diplomatic blunt intimidating persuasive empathe...
