imo its not really worth the effort to just animate the lip flaps. if you animate anything, then you have to animate everything otherwise it looks weird and creepy. See Persona 4 Arena for an example of what I mean. Full animation games like Nekopara look a lot better than just animating the lips.

Unity3d is definitely more powerful and capable of doing anything renpy can, but the learning curve is also much higher. Your total development time will also skyrocket.

Some artists use 3D in their work and composite those elements with 2D. I haven't seen any pure 3D ones that really look good unless they're fully animated. Static 3D characters always feel off somehow, the same way VNs that use photographs instead of character sprites do.
