Re: Visual Novel Publishers?

First and foremost, a publisher is a business, not a charity. [...] A publisher is going to have a broader audience as far as social media is concerned, and that really helps to widen a consumer-base, which is especially crucial when you're looking to crowdfund. Glad to see this mentioned, as it's ...

Re: What length of game do you aim for?

As a player, I've enjoyed both short and long VNs but I'd be lying if I didn't feel put out paying a fair bit for something that I know will be completed in an hour, even if I KNOW the quality of the game is good. I've enjoyed free ones I've completed within an hour or less regardless of their leng...

Re: What are your expectations on VNs with calendars?

I think for most games with time-sensitive content, a calendar is a good way to make sure the player has all the information they need to make educated decisions. A lot of VNs are small enough or have limited enough timelines that they're unnecessary, but I think for longer VNs where it's harder to ...

Re: Working with Foreign Languages

Hmm... normally I don't like anything that serves as a barrier to comprehension, but that's just my style, and some things (like this) simply aren't compatible with it. The only thing I can think of as reference would be the sign language in Katawa Shoujo, which is slightly different but has the sam...

Re: What length of game do you aim for?

If you're really desperate to figure out an appropriate length for some reason, though, probably the best way to do it would be to analyse whatever other medium is closest to your particular project and look at the time/wordcount/page count it uses, then work off that. For my current project, I've ...

Re: The quagmire of the harem protagonist

It's why I don't like writers that use silent protagonists in a game that claims to have a story. Link from Zelda is a famous mute. We don't like him personally, we like the story surrounding him. It's interesting you bring up Link, since he's usually the one example people will use to defend the i...

So have I. There's a reason why I've always preferred Huck to his friend Tom.
Yes, Tom's a bit of a prick. His book was still fun to read, though, because Mark Twain has such a great writing style.

Re: The quagmire of the harem protagonist

Given the success of VNs whose protagonists have fleshed out characters, I would say that the act of deliberately creating a poorly developed protagonist in the hope of making them a good self-insert for the player is at best an inability to see these successes, and at worst a cynical attempt to pu...

The quagmire of the harem protagonist

This is another one of those thoughts that I had, and since I liked the discussions that the previous ones had, I figured I would go ahead and post it. It's quite the read though, so I don't know if anyone has the time for it. XD Now, I don't know about you, but I've come to be dissatisfied with har...

Re: What is done in the project development phase?

^A pretty comprehensive list. An important part to keep in mind is that you are the creative director of the project, so it is your burden to explain what is needed to each of the project members and to give them all the tools and resources they need for reference. One of the biggest problems with f...

Re: How to tie your design together?

Though, I want to use this thread to ask a question: What to do if the story's atmosphere changes? Like, it started all fun and bright, but near the finishline everything turned into a huge drama with slavery, murder, intrigue, existentional crysis and brainwashing. Will it be enough to just change...

Re: How to tie your design together?

Titles, which I basically treat the same way you treat logos, are always one of the hardest things to figure out, at least for me. Unless I'm already building off of a concept, it's one of the last things I do. I still haven't named one of my projects, and it's been a couple years. It's hard to talk...

Re: Know Any Artist Recruting Sites (Free or Paid)?

True, you do have to reach out. That's how I recruited most of my members. But like you said, the free ones are often mixed in with the paid ones. From my experience, the latter is more numerous. While I don't think we need sites specifically for free work, I know we need more sites like this one: ...

Re: VN Criticism

I plan on eventually making the blog its own site. I despise editing tumblr, Wordpress, etc themes. Once I have something custom I'll style it better than this. That being said I'm not really fond of dressing up posts with unnecessary images and so on. That's good - I detest tumblr as well, althoug...

Re: Know Any Artist Recruting Sites (Free or Paid)?

Quite a few of the sites I've linked to have people who are willing to do work for free, but they're mixed in with those that'll accept money. You just have to find them and temper your expectations. Like I said before, I'm not sure if there's any sites out there that are specifically for free work,...
