Re: LSF Statistics

Been a while since I've updated this. Today I made this graph spanning the past three years (from today) where each point is a week's worth of registrations. http://s22.postimg.org/jzo1jtdap/lsf_3year_reg.png (Links to a larger version.) There appears to be seasonality to user registrations. Fairly ...

Re: Art Dumpage! Show your art ^^

Saw the pic in this tweet today and decided to see if I could model that twisty building shape. Was pretty fun! Not for a project or anything this time. Took maybe... 30 min? I dunno. Blender + Photoshop.

Re: How to stay focused?

@Tempus - Somewhat ironic that you tell her not look into productivity tools and then you tell her to use some. :p Yeah, there is a bit of irony there that I was aware of when posting. The thing is, what I suggested isn't an ongoing thing - you work out when you're free, block everything, and work....

Re: How to stay focused?

My advice would be to avoid techniques and start working on the game right away. The problem with all techniques is that they are not work. By browsing techniques you're in effect saying "this is how efficiently I would be working if I were working" ... instead of actually working. Here's your steps...

Re: A lesson in Price vs Value

What's been said so far about food being a need vs a game being a want is good. I'll add that there's additional psychological forces in play for in-person purchases that aren't present in online marketplaces like Steam. For example, if you're hungry and decide to go into a takeout place and get ser...

Re: Ludonarrative dissonance and harmony in visual novels

There isn't really any point where the game's narrative comes right out and says "people in positions of political power gradually become soulless and paranoid and obsessed with furthering their own personal agenda at the expense of others," but it never had to. The game's mechanics told that story...

Re: Are you sceptical of games using pre-made assets?

I think it's fine. This is how many people got started, myself included — I certainly don't look down on it. When I play VNs with pre-made assets and/or something like filtered photos it generally doesn't bother me provided they're consistent and somewhat fitting. Don't worry about it creating an as...

Re: Let's pool together and pay artists to create CC-BY bg a

I've been thinking about this lately, so here's a few things to consider: Consistency. As mentioned by others, the difficulty with resources free or paid for is that often you'll only find bits and pieces. In a visual novel you want a set of related environments. Not only that, you also want things ...

Re: Does Anyone Know a List of Indie Game Publishers?

Can you deduct business expenses in either case? You can (IIRC, in both cases) in the US. Yeah, you can—I knew I was forgetting something! Usage of electricity & internet related to the business, equipment, superannuation contributions, accountant fees, etc. The only thing is if you're a sole trade...

Re: Does Anyone Know a List of Indie Game Publishers?

Taxes are a hell of a thing, and they are a little bit harsh - particularly with content creators on the Internet. YouTube monetization is a good example: Even if you are just one person making money off your videos, you need to pay double taxes - one for being a business, and one for being you. Up...

Re: Background Walkthrough

Much appreciated! To be honest, I'm quite familiar with Blender, so I caught some parts of the earlier videos, but only fully watched the last two. Even there, it's sometimes a bit slow in explaining things (I think most people will know what a Photoshop mask does). But I learned quite a few techni...

Re: Methods to compress image and audio files' size

Here's an example of how extreme the savings can be when choosing the correct file type. The attached PNG file is 10,000 x 10,000 pixels and is 752kb. The equivalent good-quality JPEG with the same dimensions is around 62mb. If I crop it to 1,000 x 1,000 pixels the JPEG still produces a larger file ...

Re: Anti-Spam Questions

"_____ the left mouse button. (5 letters.)" Those three VN-specific operations have 100% overlap with generic mouse usage. In other words, you don't need to know anything about VNs to solve it—it can be easily intuited. Which is why we need to stop thinking about "questions that everyone could answ...

Re: Anti-Spam Questions

To advance the text in a visual novel, _____ the left mouse button. (5 letters.) There are 3 valid answers, beginning with c, p, and t. Of all of the questions posted, this is the only one I could answer when I first started coming to lemmasoft, since it works in VNs I had previously played. I agre...

Re: Methods to compress image and audio files' size

.png: For me, I would recommend this format the most since it is kinda in the middle between .jpg and .gif. It is also 'lossless' and (usually) doesn't have as big of a filesize as .gif does, and its size is reasonably small as well. Supports transparency but not animated images. Saving an image as...
