I don't think you should force the characters to do something they don't want to; it will just feel unnatural. So if you feel that they are better off as friends, it's ok ^^

Yeah, tvtropes is addicting. I discovered it not long ago and just can't leave it in peace x) still, some useful things can be found there, so imo it's worth reading.
