Re: What's more important? Plot, or characters?

The question is really a bit off... You can't really treat plot and characters separately because characters ARE the plot. Of course, you can tell a story without characters (I've heard there are some but never read one), and you can have a cast of characters without any plot (of that, I've seen qui...

Re: Totally newb question.

Python is the name of a programming language that, as far as I can judge, Ren'Py is programmed in. But I think you don't have to be a Python programmer to create Ren'Py scripts. Unless, of course, you want to expand the standard engine functionality with your own code. ^^

Re: How do i use japanese filenames in RenPy?

Yeah, basically, if you want to make the players' lives (and your own, too) easier, use ASCII in all file system object names. ^^

Re: Where is the horizon line usually?

Sorry if I'm being tetchy, but basically - you know how as a programmer, it's really grating to see artists render fantasy operating systems that make little sense and then give them recognisable names, like the "I know this, this is Unix!" in (IIRC) Jurassic Park ? Or how as a writer, it's frustra...

Re: Where is the horizon line usually?

Honestly, it's approximately no extra effort at all , proportionally speaking, to get it right - so why not bother to do it? All you have to do is to make sure that characters who are supposed to be taller than other characters have taller sprites and vice versa (obvious and trivial), and then make...

Re: Need some opinions from experienced game makers.

I'll mirror the statement that a design document's a pretty good thing for the writer to create before starting a major project. However, just because you have a design document doesn't necessarily mean that its contents won't ever change once you do have a partner. Things are bound to change with ...

Re: Need some opinions from experienced game makers.

What would you take as a sign of dedication? Would a regularly updated development blog be a telling sign of commitment? If I may add a bit to the previous answers to this question, I think that a good sign of dedication is, as I said, a more or less complete game design document. From my experienc...

Re: Need some opinions from experienced game makers.

Well, I don't consider myself an experienced game designer but... What convinces you to work with another person on his/her idea? If this person was a scriptwriter, do you want to see a completed script and consider its quality before anything else, or would a sample of the uncompleted work suffice?...

No, take that shoe and bang it on the table, to really drive your point home. ;)

Well, I guess Da Chief says how the scenario is to progress in general and how it's supposed to end and the writer just does the dirty work. ^^;

Re: Issue with making things look like 'Tsukuhime'

1. It doesn't look exactly like the Tsukuhime font. The tsukuhime font has white letters with a black shadowy border. Is there some way to program this border? (you don't know how much i'd like to avoid editing the font manually..). Also, as you can see, the font is larger than that for Tsukuhime (...

Re: How do you overcome speech fear...

And If someone screams "You lie" during your speech, throw a tin can at him. That's about the worst thing you can do. The best thing is to invite him to the stage and ask him to present his point of view to the audience. Of course, there is a risk that he is a professional agent provocateur specifi...

Re: Where is the horizon line usually?

I'm not sure if that's a good idea. If most of your backgrounds are great but that one special background for that one special scene is just average, it'll look like you cut corners. If most of your backgrounds are average but that one special background for that one special scene is great, then it...

Re: Where is the horizon line usually?

Effort-wise, it's in-between. I'm going to use the 3D modeling paradigm by using transforms in Photoshop to map textures to landscape lineart. Personally, I'd prioritize the backgrounds according to the time the player looks at them, and invest effort into them accordingly... but that's just the pr...
