Re: Three writing tips you shoudn't listen to

I will not, however, demonize an entire genre based on the missteps of novices. Are David Eddings, Terry Goodkind and Robert Jordan novices then? What about the Dragonlance, and Forgotten Realms series? Are they unimportant and inconsequential books whose impacts have not lasted? Terry Brooks? Why ...

Re: Three writing tips you shoudn't listen to

I'm afraid he's entirely new to me. This is the first I've heard of him. Must I be concerned about the supposed creative sins of someone writing twenty years ago whose impact has not lasted? He was dominant 20 years or so ago, his books are still sold today. He was one of the big names in fantasy. ...

Re: Three writing tips you shoudn't listen to

We must read different authors then! I don't think it's fair to say that high fantasy writers are "well known" for lacking understanding---certainly no more than authors writing in any other genre. Perhaps there are examples of weak writing from fantasy that are particularly memorable to you. But I...

Re: Three writing tips you shoudn't listen to

Fantasy authors do indeed do their Historical and Physical research if they intend to get their work accepted by their publication editors. Even more so if they don't want to get ugly emails from their readers pointing out exactly where and how they got their facts wrong. I'd like to add to this. H...

Re: Should the adverb rule apply to dialogues too?

Using adverbs in dialogue is perfectly acceptable (a person talks how they talk.) It gets a bad rap with prose though. Using adverbs in prose is more tricky. Are they used? Yes. Plenty of literature pieces and mass market works contain adverbs galore. Pat Ruthfuss has a masters in English and still ...

Re: "Fire Emblem: Awakening" and Partial Voice Acting

Not to be contrary, but if this is your position, how are you a fan of partial voice-acting? Full voice-acting would be voicing all the lines in their entirety. Partial voice-acting is either voicing some of the lines, or parts of select lines, or a mixture of the two. I'm a fan of voicing full lin...

Re: "Fire Emblem: Awakening" and Partial Voice Acting

While I'm a fan of partial voice-acting, I'm not a fan of Fire Emblem's take on it. Either voice a full-line, accurately, or not at all is my position.

Re: Does fanfiction improve your writing?

That posted essay is massively outdated. The world of fanfiction in 1988 is not even vaguely comparable to today's world, and there are plenty of fanfic authors who've gone on to become reasonably big deals. Heck, even back then there were people who went from fanfic to pro, but since fanfic was le...

Re: Making a great Prologue?

Next questions, how long/many words should a scene be, or a conversation with a character? This is my view of things (different people have different views, no right or wrong in writing.) Scenes drive the story forward, and a scene should wind down/end once something happens which furthers the stor...

Re: Does fanfiction improve your writing?

I came across an article a long time ago which, imo, gives the best advice about this sort of thing. It's a little bit outdated but the general advice is still sound, and it's really interesting so I'll quote it all (except for one piece concerning popularity which I think no longer applies): Part O...

Re: New Term for Visual Novels? [split]

For gamebook, the Wikipedia page makes it sound like a dying thing. Of course, there's no shame in reviving an old term, but it seems like an essential element of gamebooks are "choosing your adventure", which may not be representative of all visual novels. Nah. Only a few years ago, gamebook adven...

Re: New Term for Visual Novels? [split]

I participated in a research seminar on forms of interactive media a few years ago and, interestingly enough, visual novels were called ebooks, which is actually a classification I'm kind of okay with. Although a distinction should probably be made for ones that have decision-making versus purely l...

Re: PR nightmare: When indie devs are attacked

In my experience, that will just make matters worse. If you respond to them in any way whatsoever, they will take the opportunity to attack you more and louder because they know you'll respond, which means that they know you read what they said. They don't care about the truth. If you correct them,...

Considering that's one of the key/core elements of a play, it's a mighty big issue.

Re: New Term for Visual Novels? [split]

And on the Visual Novel Wiki, there is a clear distinction drawn between visual novels and adventure games. This is a pretty nice example of why people shouldn't put their faith in wiki :P. Good for quick information, but never 100% reliable. The visual novel section was probably added into the Adve...
