Re: A "Message"?

Wow. That was... really good feedback, haha. Thank you all very much! It's interesting how the answers differ. I'll keep all of this in mind! Essentially, though, memorable stories usually have some sort of subtle message in it, but it's not necessary (for some people)? And that there's usually som...

Re: Super effective writing tips from Pixar

First of all, concerning that quote from Poe: 1. I already know of this quote, and I could not agree with Poe more strongly on this point 2. You are taking this quote out of context. He is referring to short stories. --- Also, you seem to be missing the point of what I said concerning questioning yo...

Re: Super effective writing tips from Pixar

It really shouldn't take years to write a novel, if you can help it. I know Stephen King commented that you should get 2k words written each day (1k, 5 times a week at minimum). If it takes longer, well I don't know. I can't imagine it, and I have no experience on the subject (that is, taking years...

Re: Super effective writing tips from Pixar

That's a problem of not finishing your story before release, something I am strongly against in the case of most stories ((although I have seen some casual-plot light novels get away with this)). Like LateWhiteRabbit pointed out, you really need the ability to go back and fix everything. Finishing ...

Re: Super effective writing tips from Pixar

"#7: Come up with your ending before you figure out your middle. Seriously. Endings are hard, get yours working up front." I don't believe you should have an ending "locked in" until you've actually reached the ending. Get a general idea of where your story will head, or a "this would be cool, but ...

Re: Need tips for finding artists

I already tried a topic here, but it got almost no attention ((not sure why; gave a detailed description of the project and even included a wip version of the game)). I did get one person interested, but then some irl things popped up for her and she couldn't continue. And I have absolutely no famil...

Need tips for finding artists

So my first visual novel is almost complete. I have the writing done [besides some additional proofreading], the music is in, and the thing is basically ready for release. The problem, though, is that I am clueless when it comes to finding an artist. Some things you might want to know: 1. This is a ...

Re: Super effective writing tips from Pixar

I disagree, strongly. If you don't know how you want your story to end, you'll never get there. -- Writing a story one word at a time is like taking a journey one step at a time without a destination in mind. Even GPS needs a destination before it can give you a route. If you don't know where you w...

Re: Commission Woes

It IS possible that the composer gave you a license to the track that allowed him to use it in multiple games. You have to make sure that the contract you signed says that the song is only licensed to be used in your game. Sometimes composers charge less if they are allowed to rehash an old track. ...

Re: Super effective writing tips from Pixar

Firstly, thanks for the Pixar link; very, very interesting. I'd like to take exception to one or two things, but I notice that they have oceans of money and I do not; perhaps they are more right than I. I don't believe you should have an ending "locked in" until you've actually reached the ending. ...

... huh?

I haven't heard that word used in that way before!
Not to mention all the other typos in there >_< (and that was mainly thanks to Google's sometimes gawd-awful spell check)

Re: Super effective writing tips from Pixar

Pretty good, except I noticed two things: "#4: Once upon a time there was ___. Every day, ___. One day ___. Because of that, ___. Because of that, ___. Until finally ___." Is it mocking such a contrived, clique, plot; or is it trying to tell us to actually follow it? "#7: Come up with your ending be...

Re: Hinting at dark elements vs. showing them

Well I think both methods are good. Let's look at Gen Urobutchi's works, for example. In particular, Madoka Magica and Fate/Zero . With Madoka Magica , the dark elements were on the "implied side." The story itself dealt with young girls who suddenly come into contact with a world filled with horror...

Re: What makes a VN Kinetic?

Personally, I would consider a VN kinetic if it had only one ending and any choices did not effect the story in any significant way. And I would consider a VN "semi-kinetic" if it has few different endings, and there aren't a lot of dynamic choices.
