Re: English List

Yeah, those screens were captured from a demo aimed at American publishers, although nothing ever became of their efforts.

Edit: I've uploaded the demo on Megaupload now (not sure how long it'll stay up though), if anyone's interested in having a look.

Re: Hirameki gone

English translations seem to fail miserably, maybe that's why people won't respond to those willing to do it? I don't think that's an issue. Where freeware is concerned, many creators have been enthusiastic about English translations. However, business negotiations are another matter. Doujin circle...

Re: Utawarerumono

has anyone other played this beautiful game? I've tried up to the first five or six battles. The art is decent, but I can't say I'm impressed with what I've read. Supposedly, the scenario becomes less generic as it progresses. However, the atrocious script (not unlike early JRPG writing) bothers me...

Re: Hirameki gone

Outside the otaku subculture, visual novels have limited potential in Japan (the average Joe doesn't buy them, which is why they're mainly eroge/galge). Lack of mainstream success is by no means a western phenomenon.

Re: Hirameki gone

Yeah, JAST USA is the only company remaining (excluding Media Blasters, who may not release anything beyond Bible Black and Discipline). Supposedly, they survive simply because of non-gaming sectors of their business.

Re: Hirameki gone

Why didn't they try releasing episodic games? (Sam and Max, Half-life, etc. now take this route.) Expecting a targeted audience to lap up a full-length visual novel sounds pretty demanding: many gamers simply can't sit still for more than 20 mins to pore through tons of dialogues. You need to let t...

They weren't, but it looks like they changed their mind
That's because someone else offered to translate (and proved that they were serious), while others from NNL's IRC channel were recruited to handle non-translation aspects.

NNL is taking on a supervisory role, which should be a big help.

Re: Long anime series

Da Capo (a 26-episode series, followed by another 26-episode side-story) and Higurashi are about the longest these things get. There's only so much they can do with fixed amounts of material.

Re: CLANNAD TV

What do you think about the series so far (even if you didn't play the game)? Borderline mediocre. I don't know if it's just Fuuko's arc, but the drama is awfully forced. Also, humor is a weak point, with too many recycled gags and a bunch of jokes that don't work in the context of TV/film/anime. F...

Re: Girls like shoujo, guys like shounen..tastes in anime/manga?

I have the same general understanding of 'shonen' as Chrono, really; I know that technically it should just mean "for boys", but generally speaking it seems to translate to "shallow crap" most of the time. :/ That's probably because a lot of "shallow crap" is directed toward boys then. I don't read...

Re: Kinetic or not?

Yeah, the Japanese usage was just an exercise in branding. No one else uses "Kinetic Novel" besides VisualArt's (for their budget-priced short stories). and what would the other types be? In Japan, common genre classifications are visual novel, sound novel, and adventure game. In English, I think we...

Re: Kinetic or not?

And according to our lovely source Wikipedia, the KineticNovel-product line also contains only non-interactive content. Please correct me if this is wrong, though, because I myself have no personal experience of that line. No, there are Kinetic Novels that feature decision points (and thus branchin...

Re: School Days anime [spoilers]

Has anyone else seen the final episode? Much better  than I expected... and with an ending like that, it's a pretty good way of immortalising the series. I thought the last episode was pretty consistent with the rest of the series (which is a bit of a mess, being poorly paced and inconsist...

Re: Is it normal for a guy to like BL?

No, he isn't, actually. I know him quite well. That is why I think if it is abnormal for him to like yaoi. That defends on how you define gay or bisexual. Someone can have homoerotic tendencies (feel attraction toward those of the same sex), but not practice homosexuality. Only the individual would...
