Re: Japanese voice actors / Seiyus
I think the disconnect we're seeing is that: if you don't speak Japanese, and your game is in English, what do you expect your Japanese Voice actors to SAY? Are you going to engage a translator to translate your novel into Japanese for the SOLE PURPOSE of having a side "livening up" feature? I am no...

Re: Interactions in a Linear novel
If you really think your story might bore the audience then I don't think the problem will be fixed by you shoving in choices that do nothing. Why do you think this story is boring? Would YOU be bored by this story? If so, have you considered why THIS is the story you need to tell? Or, alternately, ...

Re: Interactions in a Linear novel
If there is no branching then what is the point of choices? I mean this quite seriously. Branches are of course only one sort of application of choices but you don't seem to miss any gameplay elements either--you mention stat building but it seems almost tangential if it can't affect how the plot go...

Interestingly structured VNs
How much fun do you have when planning the structure of your VNs? I am working on a chapter in my longer visual novel that involves two characters teaming up to try and prevent the theft of a sculpture at an Art Gala where they are undercover as guests. When planning it out, I said to my team "Hey h...

Re: Budgeting and Prices
its random no one knows the right number, the only way to cut your lost would be to make the art, music and coding yourself. I am already doing the sprite art, writing and coding the game in house with my small team, not to mention directing the project's creative vision, making the Demo Logo/GUI, ...

Budgeting and Prices
How do you gauge what a fair price is for developing a project's budget? First, a story: Not too long ago I engaged a friend of mine who is an artist to do some backgrounds for my project's Demo. He was having a summer commission sale, so I thought I'd give him a shot. However, his prices were initi...

Re: Asexual and/or Aromatic Relationships in VNs?
I'm probably Ace or at least Demi, and I think the answer to your question is that I want complex relationships with interesting people. I feel like since so often friendship routes are thrown in to complement romantic routes, they sort of get the short end of the stick in narrative arc and complexi...

Re: Fight Scenes and Violence in VNs?
I am using a choice-web based "combat" minigame for my fight scenes. I put combat in quotes because while actually directly fighting monsters is one thing it's used for, the same sort of mini-game is also used for interviewing people, pursuing suspects and even casting magic. The basic idea is to he...

Re: How do you guys plan/write bad endings?
I have only one really true "bad ending" for my main project. There are sort of short branches if you lose the combat minigame but those just take you back to the beginning of the fight. The true "Bad Ending" on the other hand is focused on the central existential threat of the game: Will the main c...

Re: Does Explaining Character Flaws Nullify Them?
I don't think your friend is quite correct. I particularly object to the idea that flaws are "a personality traits that existed by choice" because what does that even mean? She's basically discounted both history AND genetics-- the two major contributors to personality. Many of the best and most dyn...

Re: Ideas for minigames/puzzles?
What if you were just solving the puzzles to get the clues, but weren't locked in the room? Either the door to proceed is locked, or else even there's no lock at all and you just don't have the character let the player leave. (Except maybe once for dramatic effect you can have the room lock on you.)...

Re: Turning a story into a VN...?
The visual novel I am working on was originally a plan for a TV series so I have a bit of experience here. It's totally doable! However in order to take full advantage of the Visual Novel format, I would really recommend stepping through your story playing the what-if game. You want to give your pla...

Re: How do you Start out as a VN Writer/Programmer?
I suggest you become familiar with the capabilities of RenPy before you begin writing. You don't have to learn to program in order to do this-- playing a bunch of games made on the engine would be ok--but you will have a 1000% easier job down the line if you have an idea of what sorts of scenarios w...

Re: Do you write a VN like a novel or a screenplay?
Interestingly, I seem to have settled on a weird shorthand that is like half screenplay and half Ren'py code. It's not anything that I could like, have run straight out of the box, but it keeps me thinking about how I want things to appear on the screen. Here's the first scene with Nina (My Main Cha...
