If you're not sure where to place CGs, referencing popular visual novels and game cutscenes is a good place to start.
Another option to consider is a special sprite. If you're using the same person for sprites and CGs, it may be a more budget-friendly alternative.

Re: How much does background lineart cost?
Do you have an example? It honestly depends on the level of detail, so a point of reference is key to throwing out a quote.

Re: Advice on Possible Contest
I'm assuming that a script for your contest will be for a Visual Novel style (BG layer, character sprite with a text box), which is much more involved than an entry for Choice of Game's contest. Especially if you decide to ask for a RenPy file. Choice of Game is basically a digital Choose Your Own A...

Re: CG Question
+1 to not adding CGs until you have everything figured out.
Another option that hadn't been mentioned is making a custom sprite pose. I imagine that it would be a time-saver for most instances rather than a full-on CG.

Re: Should I use flat shading or a painted style?
If I was forced to choose, I would prefer a simpler coloring style and a larger variety of expressions/poses. I can't say for sure whether I prefer one or the other because I honestly think it really depends on how well the art compliments the story. For a victorian gothic drama, a painted style wou...

Re: Hatred for humanity
I believe that there is a not insubstantial number of people who believe the human race is and overall destructive existence. The difference, IMO, between those who go on a murderous rampage vs. those who don't, are people with a massive issues with entitlement and control. "The world is terrible, t...

Re: Drawing anime with a mouse
This is the only sample of art I could find where I used a mouse from start to finish. I HAVE had to do inking with a mouse in college, but I preferred to do it on Adobe Flash (now Animate). Other than bragging rights, there really wasn't any upside to doing anything solely with a mouse. The most hi...

Re: Sprite Modification: Opinion?
Production artists are often asked to match styles of pre existing concepts/assets. As long as they can follow the style, this is a perfectly viable (and cheaper) option.

Re: Sprite Organization
As far as I know, the ways to change expressions only differ by the number of layers you decide to use. There's no real "wrong" way to do things, but some ways can be more wasteful than others in either your use of time or number of unused assets. When working on a game where you have limited resour...
